I know that it is often stated that the fw group is far ahead of the sw group for aesthetics but between the two, sw when done correctly does a better job of representing the underwater world.

Both are beautiful but for different reasons to me.
Honestly I don't like when people try to emulate a tree or dry river bed underwater, that's just silly. I also don't like when fish are an afterthought, sometimes they are chosen to complement the scape, but yes sometimes it looks like fish are actually photoshopped in - they just don't "fit."

I don't think it's easy to replicate a natural reef in that I'm betting it's difficult to keep corals found in one area in the ocean in your tank - reef tanks are a compromise too in that they don't reflect real life settings. That's just what I see though - I'd love to see an example where someone recreated a setting in their tank drawn form a real reef.

I'll always have one of each type of tank though, I love them each for different reasons.

This is a great video to under the Nature Aquarium concept.

Not all FW seek to mimic nature scenes with trees, mountains, waterfalls, etc. That's a new trend. Amano himself doesn't do that in any of his tanks at his gallery.

Here's a classic example of NA with focus on driftwood:

I want a planted tank so bad but there are just not enough good reliable retailers in the US. All the good tanks are from small hole in the wall Euro companies that it just seems easier to go salted.

I personally think a planted tank would be more difficult. Fighting algae and keeping plants at the same time seems extremely difficult.

By "good tanks" do you mean the fancy rimless ADA type tanks? There's also Do!Aqua (I have their 60-f) and even Mr. Aqua (I have a 12 long and 13.3 bow front)...I did have to order them online though.

In the right hands, someone can do wonders with a simple 10 gallon, planted or reef I think.

Seriously? 625g? Damn I need to move over to the USA! I live in an above average sized house in the UK and a 625g tank would take up about a third of our living room! Literally.

That's without the QT, mixing barrels and equipment

'murica!

I can see why you're excited to get started on it though. Make sure you get a journal thread going! I'd love to it from start to finish

What's the big deal? We all have tanks and houses that big in America. I still fondly remember my first little 75gal betta tank when I was a kid. Totally worth the hour trek to the east wing of my parents' humble abode.

I feel your pain I'm 23 and still living in my parents house... university tuition fees really drained my funds! Got my degree and I'm not much better off tbh

And I'd guessed you were in graphic design based on your avatar snazzy!
