Clam Question

So I have been looking for a cheaper option of feeding scampi where he uses his smashers. From what I can see a lot of people tell me live clams from Publix. Won't they die if you just put them in the tank? If not that would be a wonderful option. Anyone have any info on this?

The clams from the grocery store are likely cold water, so yes, they would start to die upon entering your aquariumm

I was mainly wondering because I wanted to have them in the mantis tank for a local source of food that was fresh and alive.

I just purchased aquarium-acclimated clams and oysters from ebay. they sell the small snails, too. Fairly cheap with free shipping, too.

Thanks to the gulf stream new england can see fairly high water temps in the summer, in the 80's in some areas. If you are buying littlenecks or cherrystones from the grocery store they will be adapted to handle reef temps for a short period of time, acclimating them and feeding them are a different story.

I buy manila clams from my grocery store. I get about 5 at a time and wait an hour for them to dig. The ones that do not dig i put in the freezer.

I only buy a five because i dont want to prolong the time they spend in the sand where they could die and me not know it.

crayfish live in freshwater?? What crawdads are you talking about?

Roy said you can feed freshwater inverts, just to keep it to a minimum. They can live in saltwater long enough to be hunted down.

yes crayfish, I would only feed it them ever so often just to change it up. as soon as I put them in tank she would smash and eat and I would go behind and pick out the left overs
