34 gallon
Hello all I have recently acquired a red Sea reefer 170 system this is a 34 gallon tank with the dimensions of 24*24*20 I am trying to figure out what return pump to buy as it does not come with one and I also have a black box led lighting I was wondering if that will be strong enough for this tank. This is going to be a slow build with buying parts slowly but any ideas or advise is welcomed. Also what skimmer should I go with?

Isn't a 170 liter equal to 44 gallons??? Those dimensions of 24x24x20 equals 49 gallons. I think you will have a lot more water in there than you think.

24x24x20 is 49 gallons. So not sure why you are saying 34.... but whatever.

Have you checked out Hentz's build in the Sps forum? He has the same tank

Trying to figure out if the system is 34 gallons, as originally stated, or 49 gallons, as it would be from originally stated dimensions, a difference of almost 50% is a clarification and not being a pedant.
I like Sicce pumps... quiet..... Look at this one.... it has max head of 6 feet... how many feet are you pumping up, I am guessing 5 ?? So this one would work.. http://www.bulkreefsupply.com/sicce-...p-357-gph.html You can look at Sicce site, and it will show you how much pump will move at various heads http://sicceus.com/aquarium.html If you are pumping to 1.5 meters or so, this shows the 1.5 will move about 120 gallons/hr and the 2.0 will move about 240.... again, at 5 feet head. These pumps are also adjustable flow, so you can get less flow. How much flow do you need from this pump vs. running additional power heads in the tank. I have a 125 gal/hr pump in my Innovation 40 gallon, and an MT10 power head as well, and that is plenty of movement. There is no singular answer to this question. I think the Sicce 2.0 would provide the proper flow if you throttle it back quite a bit, and if you are using the return pump for a significant amount of your flow. I would pick the 1.5... because I have a power power head in my tank as well. Other considerations... the bigger the pump, the more the water level goes up in your tank... the bigger the pump, the LOWER the residence time in any media the water is passing through, although it should pass through more times, so that may be a moot point. |

Red Sea recommends the use of a 530gph pump. I use an Eheim, pretty sure it's the 2000 Compact. I've dialed back the flow along with the drain for noise purposes.
In the tank itself I'm running the Gyre 130 in a vertical position on the far left corner of the back wall. I have it set around 60% on long pulses to create the Gyre flow all around my Aquascape. For a protein skimmer, I'm using the Bubble Magus Curve 5. It SUCKED on this tank until I realize the other hole that allows you to change the pump intake location was unplugged. Now it's skimming like a beast as it should! Flow would vary on what corals you're keeping. I keep SPS only aside from a colony of Gobstopper Palythoas. So in my case, strong flow is required. However, if you're keeping corals from Softies to LPS, high flow will not be required. Though you still want to try and reduce dead spots in the tank. Flow from the return pump is fine for whatever you do. Slower will allow more water time in the sump to be filtered. Faster will allow more water to be turned over quicker and be filtered. Either way, you'll be dialing down your flow to manage noise so don't go with anything high powered. Black box will be fine. I did a PAR Reading on two over my frag tank. Was quite shocked at how steady the PAR was around my frag racks aside from being high in PAR. I personally use the Hydra 26HD and run a profile that was copied by Ecotech Marine's SPS AB+. I will say, I'm noticing growth on my Acropora every 2-3 days along with amazing polyp extention. Colors are varying as I'm playing with my ZEOvit additives. They're going from pastel (ZEOvit's goal) to darker in tissue from my feeding extremely heavy. Either way, my corals are enjoying life! LX20000, 34 gallons is the display volume of the Reefer 170. 9 gallons is the sump volume. Total system is 43 gallons. However, with rock taking up volume, it's always safe to just say your system is what your display is.

Ya, the Sicce 2.0 is rated at 540 GPH I think, but that is obviously without any head on it. So I think that would be the right rating for the Red Sea.
