Need advice for 55g sump build
Hey everyone! I got my hands on a 55g long tank that I will use as a sump for my 180g reef tank. I have never built a sump before so im just looking for advice. The tank is 48" long. How would you recommend setting it up? Filter socks>protein skimmer> refug> return pump?
Im interested in seeing other peoples builds so if you have done something similar Id love to see it. Thanks! |

Setting up can vary widely.
I wanted a refugium so I dedicated 1/4 of a 4' tank to it & left the rest open. I have dealt with a very small return pump section & swore never again. Glass baffles should be 1/8" smaller than the inside of the width & 1/4" thick. Many suggest an under - over for baffles to help with bubble elimination. A search for building a sump should get you plenty of suggestions with pics or diagrams.

Figure out how much space you need for the skimmer and add 50% to that
Figure out how much space you need for the return pump and double that The rest is fuge. I'd incorporate a bubble trap too.
