It depends on which Hydra you have. The older (not HD)Hydras are supported through the AWM module. The AWM module, however, has been discontinued. If you need an AWM, you might be able to find a used one.

The Hydra HD and Prime HD will be able to be fully controlled by an Apex (2016) in the near future. Full support for these was just announced and will be demonstrated at RAP Orlando next weekend.

I have 4 Hydra HD 26 above Red Sea 650. I also have apex but I chose to plug lights into a power strip and then directly into a wall outlet and bypass the apex. I control/access the lights via AI iPhone app, though they are basically “set it and forget it”.

I still use the 8 outlets provided by the apex for other reef components (return pump/solenoid/skimmer/heater/chaeto reactor/CArx/etc).

I also run 3 Hydra 52 HDs and 2 Hydra 26 HDs through AI's app. It is very user friendly. I don't really know how the Apex could control them better? I do have each light plugged individually into a controlled outlet in case the tank overtemps.
