with the back of the stand open, there can be a cloud of heat without circulation... (just a thought)
also, if you open the canopy, does the temperature in the tank drop? if so, then it will be an indicator that its holding in too much heat. (a quick way to tell) keep moving forward, and keep us updated!!

only if you take the current one off (while the fan is running) and see if there is more flow. if not, then there are no back flow or restrictions and that output wont help anything.... and the current one isnt hurting anything either.

Top of inside cabinet 88 degrees w/o exhaust fan. I have a laser temp gun & have been taking temps all over the inside canopy. I did before exhaust fan & I am adding one more this weekend then will take temps again.

Tank temp this morning before lights came on was 77.3 degrees. That leads me to believe the light are contributing to the heat more than the pumps in the stand.

especially since the pumps run all night, and you have a temp drop. (just out of curiosity, what is the stand temp? since you have a temp gun?) it may be giving off heat as well, but when combined with the lights, it causes a temp increase

i know i keep pushing this, but im honestly just throwing out ideas...... (i hope thats ok)
If your stand temperature is higher then your canopy temp, it may be a good idea to run that 2nd fan on the stand. (you could control it with your APEX to come on when the lights start ramping. that way its acting as a temp controller and can turn the fan off after lights out. that may be all you need. but if the canopy becomes hotter, then deff go with the fan on the canopy. (also, you have your exhaust ducts facing up to get the hot air, but do you have anything on the intake air pointing down toward the water? i know your in Texas (and i know the weather) and the house air is always lower then your tanks's lowest 78deg, so it may be a good idea to point it down to the water to help with evap cooling and to also push the hot off the surface and direct it is a rolling motion up to the exhaust duct work. )

I've currently got three in my 250 gallon system; a Tomini, a Purple, and a Powder Blue. The Powder Blue is the new one to my system and I've only had it for about 6 months. The Tomini and Purple I've had for a little over 4 years without issue. IME, Tangs are more susceptible to ich infections, but other than that, you're incorrect. Just like any other fish, if you provide them with the appropriate conditions, they're pretty easy to take care of. And just like every other fish, if you stress them out, fail to meet their living requirements, and dont care for them, they'll die on you. Nick
