grinding noise
Hi,
I didn't know where i should ask about this so i'm trying here. I'm hearing some grinding noise in my tank after the lights go out. I haven't seen anything but i'm wondering what could be doing this. Anybody have an idea about what could be doing this? All i have in the tank is hermits, snails and a cleaner shrimp. No fish yet.

Have you heard this on more than once or is this a onetime thing? Mantis make a clapping sound or a crack like that of a gun. So probly not a mantis. Also pistol shrimp make similar sounds to a mantis so probly not one of them. I ask about the onetime thing cus I had a black limpet that one time got on my mp40 and its shell was far enough into the pump that the shell was being waked by the propeller. Grinding is a new one by me. Sorry for not having any help for you.

Is it a continual grinding or sporadic?
I've never heard of any critters making a grinding noise, especially not the ones you listed. They make no noise whatsoever. |

I'm thinking equipment over livestock for this.

HI,
I've heard that noise a few times. It sounded like something scratching hard on a rock.

Sporadic... could be something like a bearing going out on a powerhead? Or dirt/dust/small bits of LR caught where the impeller rotates and catching from time to time.
What kind of powerheads do you have? Is it something like a Koralia? I've had one that would shut off time time to time but immediately start back up. Every time it did it, it made a small grinding noise as things balanced back out and started spinning. Does it only happen at night? Or is that really the only time your house is quiet enough to hear it? Or the only time you're home to hear it? |

Or it could be the dudes teeth after tallying up how much he spent on the tank so far. I do that some times.
