I also order much of my equipment from the US, but I seriously envy that those living on the military bases can save so much on shipping!

Wow, there are quite a few of us out there it seems!
I've only used Natural really since getting back. I went to Pau Pau, but got depressed (though they seem to have a better range for certain fish than Natural, like gobies, cardinals and flasher wrasses from time to time). I almost bought my N.helfrichi from there, but saw what looked suspiciously like ich and instead went to Natural for it (never had a problem with a fish from there - they're very careful). For corals however, Natural's specialism is SPS, particularly Acropora and isn't so great for certain LPS or softies, which is what I'm after mostly. They have a few LPS and softies, but not really the types I most want to get (chalices and blastos - their blastos are not in great shape). The only other fish in my tank so far is a Tail Spot Blenny from Charm, which came in excellent shape, despite really not being sure about ordering from a purely online shop. Otherwise, I've got a long list of favorites in my browser that I haven't used yet, but plan to for certain stock (like Kazika for tiny Okinawan gobies). Oh yes, I got my live rock from Aqua planning (for the first lot), the shop linked to the Okinawa Aquarium. It was surprisingly disappointing (almost barren, in contrast to the brilliant rock I bought from there about 7 years ago), so the second lot of rock came from CP Farm, aquacultured in Okinawa.

Hey guys, help me choose a layout. I am in the process of converting my ADA mini garden into a FOWLR (you can see my old FW set-up here: http://zen-aquariums.blogspot.com/ ). I might swap out the HOB filter for a Mame in-tank skimmer. And I plan to hook up a Ehiem canister using ADA lily pipes for extra flow as well as plumbing in a Hydor in-line heater. The light fixture is made for 27w, but is too short for mixed white/blue actinic bulb unless I downgrade to 18W. So I might add some blue LEDs for color. Any other suggestions are welcome. TIA.
Please rate the following four layouts: Option 1: There is a swimming channel between the two piles. This layout maximizes the foreground sandbed area. Option 2: Basically the same as Option 1 but I rotated the left pile to accentuate the channel. The downside is that it takes up a lot of real estate in the foreground and there is alot of unseen space in the rear. Option 3: An open cave. Option 4: A tighter cave. Thanks, Jim |

Neat set up! It's got to be either 1 or 3 for me, with a slight preference for 1, as 3 looks a bit like it could fall pretty easily. Plus 3, although attractive to look at, does leave you with a lot of shaded area under the top rock. The attraction of 2 would be that the rock near the front of the tank would give you lots of opportunities to see the coral really close up, but that shouldn't be an issue with that size tank anyway and you might want to put a few small corals on the sand bed area.

I agree with Tom. 1 or 3, with preference for 1.

Thanks guys. I'll go with #1. I got the live rock from PauPau. It is only two stops from my office so it was more convenient than trekking out to Natural.

I'd like to see pics of people's tanks if you guys have any available.
To start off, here is mine: (In retrospect, I should have closed the door behind me when I took the pictures.) Largely an anemone tank, though I also have quite a few fish picked out by my husband. I have 4 giganteas (though one is still a bit bleached) and 3 RBTAs. A few corals here and there. I don't have a current pic of the sump, and in any case, I'm considering changing the placement of my algae scrubber. Maybe I'll post one later after I decide what to do there.

This was the bit I was dreading! You have a gorgeous looking tank Sangogo - I've always fantasized about putting together a tank for some colorful carpets and yours is a great case of putting that into practice!
Here's the latest shot of mine. Only recently set up, with not much of interest in it yet. I actually need to take a new shot or two. Since this was taken I've added an Acan, Favia and Alveopora. Though they wouldn't make a huge difference to the impact of the FTS right now.

Tom, that is gonna be a cool tank once it matures. I really like your aquascaping. I don't know if you have the lights for it, but that sandbed is screaming for a garden of clams. I usually bury some base rock under the sand to give them something to anchor to.

As it happens, I really want to get at least one clam this time. I've got a 150w MH, plus 4 x T5s, so I reckon I should be OK with clams under the MH in the middle area. But I'm waiting a bit longer before taking the plunge. Chura Umi is an Okinawan supplier which seems to sell them quite cheaply. http://chura-umi.com/

Raising them was pretty easy, as long as there aren't any aggressive hitchhiker crabs in the tank (guess who ate my baby clams??), but I hate paying the shipping from Okinawa. I am interested in trying again though, using my sump until they get big enough to avoid the clutches of the hermit crabs. I currently have three clams, which I got for about 3500yen at Hikaru Aquarium. They're pretty decently sized too, but two are the usual boring blue color. Edit: I should also add that the above seller seems to have full-sized clams (regular colors) for 1200 yen starting bid.

Maybe once my main tank is up and running anyone interested could do a joint buy and split the shipping?
Might be an idea? I'm very fond of clams as well. Matt |

I'd love to, though I wish the colors sold here were as varied as those in the US. It's pretty rare that you can get anything that's not blue or metallic blue. That's partly what attracted me to Chura Umi, as they seemed to have more variety.
Meanwhile tragedy has struck my tank, as I discovered what looked very much like an isopod attached to the back of my Firefish. It was tiny, but clearly attached. When I tried to catch the Firefish it detached. My wife and I look at the fish every night and this is the first night we've seen this. Maybe it came in with a recent coral purchase. Really not sure what to do now. The alternatives, based on a quick search here, seem to be "nuke" the tank, basically destroying all life in it (not really an option) or leave it fishless and unfed for 6 months. Can't believe I might have to manage without fish for 6 months.

If that is what you saw then that is the worst luck of all. Sorry to hear it.
If you see it attached to the fish again and can catch it that would be great, but as you note they are quick. I don't know what you can do other than the options you list. |

I read this article: http://reefkeeping.com/issues/2006-02/bp/index.php which features the guy trapping the isopods individually, but I'm not sure whether any normal human would have the patience to do so.
The article doesn't seem to support nuking though. But everyone has different results.

Does anyone have used equipment they want to sell? I am looking for pumps (for mixing salt) or blue led lighting. Just list whatever you have and I'll let you know if anything interests me.

Many thanks to Matt for showing me this, but just wanted to make sure that everyone in the thread is aware of this weekend's big event:
www.eco-aqua.jp They claim it's going to have some shop booths, so it may be possible to get some deals. It sounds quite a bit like how Aquario in Roppongi Hills used to be. I'm quite excited! (Thanks again, Matt!) For those of you going, maybe we can meet up. Any one have any scheduled time to show up? I think we will show up tomorrow, but being that I look like a generic local, it'd probably be hard to find me.
