I dosed vodka for about 2 months. The water did clear up and the corals became a little brighter. I quit dosing when I had a green cyano out break. It is tempting to go back to dosing.. But than again I really dislike green cyano.

I was thinking of maybe just doing the minimum dose and just keeping it at that with out increasing... I currently read 0 nitrates on 2 test kits without dosing. My only problem is a little HA here and there that wont go away. I have also started running GFO.

Is the green cyano a side effect of dosing vodka??? I've been getting it in my tank and it just won't go away.

Are you sure he is dosing with rubbing alcohol?? Any non flavored alcohol will work. Read the article that Genetics linked.

jhammond, yes some folks experience cyano while carbon dosing.

here's my 2 month time frame (sep 30 to nov 7), but I switched out the lights in late oct from 65K's to 12K's. I wanted something bluer but the brown and green stuff's all gone!

I did keep notes on my Vodka dosing regimen if anyone wants to skim through. I included dosages, lighting changes, feeding, etc.

Genetics,

I've got my Nitrates to 0 and phosphate to .01. Do i still need to run my refugium? Should I turn off the lights on the fuge?

Although my Nitrates and PHosphate at 0, my display tank still has a lot of brown algae. I guees it came from dosing vodka, but i cut half my dosage already.

I don't think my post posted. It is a personal choice on whether to get rid of your macro. If it starts to die-off then yes I would remove it. Otherwise, it may be nice to keep around for other benefits.

Watch out for coral fading, and over feed you fish to help with that. I have been dosing for 3 1/2 months now and once i started dosing AAs and over feeding none of my corals have faded at all.

How is over feeding help recover corals from fading?

My setosa started fading to almost white from pink-red. I did hold back on feeding at the same time though. Maybe that was it.

I am at one month of dosing. Nitrates have always been at zero but phosphates are at .25 (API). I neglected the tank for about a year, no water changes and bad RO/DI filters for top-off. At first the shock of MUCH better water clarity/lack of DOC resulted in a loss of color. Now colors are starting to come back a bit. For the first few weeks the skimmer was filling up twice a day, but it's now back on pace to once a day. I am extremely happy with the results so far, and will continue adding .5ML a week to my dosing regiment with hopes of algae reduction.

If you are on the fence the grass seems to be greener.

Since there are 2 threads up on Vodka and I didn't get a reply in the other, I am asking the same question again:

I have been dosing Vodka for 2.5 month. Nitrates are barely detectable but Phosphates have remained 0.045.

I just started getting diatoms on the sand and the cyano is getting progressively worse. Can't be due to low flow or old bulbs.

Should I stop the Vodka completely or gradually? I got a bunch of Prodibio for free from a friend, start dosing that maybe?

Because the vodka strip the nutrients from the tank, which mean the coral aren't getting enough food. so over feeding puts in a bit more nutrients than the vodka can take and the coral absorb it . I was having some fading on my setosa as well, and added a ffew more fish and overfeed to help with the nutrients.

Speckled Grouper, cyano has the ability to utilize ethanol. Give prodibio a try and see if it helps you out. I've heard some people have luck with certain organic additions while others cause user-specific cyano issues.

That's what I thought too. Now you think I should quit Cold Turkey or taper off?

It's your decision. If you quite cold turkey you should start prodibio right away. Otherwise I would taper off. Also, people have used the two in combination.

I looked up Prodibio and has tons of products. Which one are we talking about here in conjunction with Vodka?

So I tried vodka a few times for a few months to make it work, but either my corals were just bleaching, or I was getting RTN.

I wasn't dosing any aminos, and wasn't trying to OVERFEED (maybe I should have). I think I wasn' getting enough nutrients in.

I just stopped, but my corals are recovering, though, very slowly. Sucks. Now, I'm just trying the hard way. Blah.

I feel like if you're dosing vodka, you NEED to dose AA. Maybe that's where I went wrong. I wasn't doing any of that.
