Heater question
Ok sounds simple but will it work. There’s no room in my sump for my 17 inch long heater. None of the sections are long or wide enough to submerge it. So onto my goofy idea. If I take a piece of 4 inch pvc capped on one end and stand it in the sump cap down (long enough for the heater)Put the heater and my return line in it. Then I’m thinking a Y pointed back down to the sump. Probably cap the Y off and drill it for some vinyl tubing. Think it would work?

You may want to look at another brand heater. I know Hydor 400 watt heaters are shorter than eheim 300 watt heaters.
Assuming you still wanted to do what your thinking. I would use a why with one straight leg and insert the heater in there. Feed your drain through the other leg of the why and let it flow out the bottom. If need be drill holes or cut slots in the bottom to allow plenty of flow. As the temp sensor is near the top of the heater you may need to cut the top of the why shorter so it is in the water flow. Should be an easy project.

I like your thinking. I’ve never needed a heater till I bought LED lighting last weekend. Now my fishies are gonna catch a cold! And yeah you guessed it ,Eheim, that was the best option at my lfs.

You could also consider getting two ~half+ sized heaters instead of the bigger one. Reduces the impact of a fail in either direction unless both fail.
