Duh... thanks. I think I get it. So, what do you think of all this, since you're the reef chemist around here. Is it all just my imagination? I really would love to get back to using my Purigen again but when I back off from the Vitamin C, my Tubb's blues close up again.

According to Thiel's experiences you shall be able to use it for 14 to 15 days out of every three months so there might be another factor affected by the vit C that makes your zoas close up.
Look for it specially your normal PH and alkalinity. Vitamin C affects both so may be what your zoos like is a bit less PH and alkalinity that you would maintain otherwise. Of course I assume you already checked everything else. (Bugs, temp, ORP, organics, light, flow, etc.)

Puffer you seem to be focused on your blues?? How are your other polyps reacting and do they seem healthier?
I do not have any sick or suffering corals as I stated when I started dosing. I just thought it was an interesting idea so I gave it a shot. I can say that everything is healthy and plump. Some of the colors seem better, but it might be in my head. I do not see why he states to only use it for 14-15 days? I am at that point and I do not think I will stop. I really dislike purigen-JMHO. Why do you want to start using it again? Is your water clarity poor? You could run it for a day or so then take it out and start dosing again. I will have some tank shots taken today and post some pictures of my polyps and how they look. I wish I had taken before and after pictures. on Uberfrags other people seem to be having positive results as well.

Sorry but that 1996 article by Thiel is more of a marketing scheme...
He say we should not use Baking soda but use a complete buffer. Also his math are completly wrong.. Knowing that the EC50 (half of maximum effective effect) of Vitamin C is 140ppm in bateria and 360ppm in Daphnia, I think the 30 ppm isn't even strong enought. Also, the LC50 in fish is > 1,000 - < 2,200 mg/l for 96hours (50% of the fish died at that dosage). http://worldaccount.basf.com/wa/NAFT...f88009ae5a.pdf

I am not understanding what you are trying to say? Puffer does anything else suffer or does stuff look better?

I'm trying this too because some of my zoos have been decimated by killer amphipods (I've seen them muching on the zoos), so I took my zoos and am hanging them high in the tank after freshwater dipping them to get the amphipods out. The sixline in the tank have eaten any visible amphipods and now I am dosing the tank with vitamin C to see if the zoos come back.

My zoas/palys that were closing are all open now & the other ones that were looking fine are bigger & more colorful. I'm really sorry I don't have any "before" pics.

Well I've been dosing for about a week, my remaining 1 colony of zoos that I was sure was gona die looks slightly better... My other zoo colonies are to far gone (their condition is beyond closed, they are melted blobs that slightly resemble zoos)
I think my next role in this experiment is to continue dosing and purchase a new healthy colony and see what happens (I have purchased new colonies about 7times over the past year all but 1 were lost) |

How much are you dosig now? I've decided I am going to place the C in the end of my sump, instead of the front, after where I plave the Purigen so I can use it again. I really think that's why I'm not having much PE on my SPS, because of all the palys & leathers in there & no Purigen. Hopefully the Purigen won't filter out too much of the C before the corals can absorb it. Again--a good reason for me to dose 2x/day.

Has anyone tried dosing with the kent marine vitamin c? whats the difference between the liquid and tablets?
If you dose this everyday why cant you run any mechanical media such po4 remover, carbon, chemi pure, purigen etc? Sorry for the newbie questions |

I do not think a phosban reactor with phosban in it would take out the C. I could be wrong though??

Hey what happens when you get a new frag of zoa's and they havent been in a tank where vit c was added?? do you just acclimate and they will be ok? or do you have to not dose for a couple days and then start over?

My understanding is most animals can only utilize a certain amount of Vit C and the rest is just wasted... which may explain why some people have gotten by with very high levels of Vit C with no problems. I'm up to 4,000mg a day in my 40breeder...no problems yet |
