Skimmer off at night?
So I work at an LFS, an I sometimes get asked if its alright to turn skimmers off at night. My reply is usually that I wouldnt reccomend it, but that Im not really sure.
Now Im in the situation where a skimmer is an option, but I would want to hook it up to my lightin set up, therefor it would not be on at night. Does this make it useless? I just was goin to get a Saline Solutions skimmer, nothing special, just to help clean up my Trates. Thanks, Danny |

the only thing I can think of if you feel compelled is the fact that the water to start to stagnate every night being deprived of movement - I am guessing you are shooting for silence at night?

Yep, I do have other submerged pumps in there, so the water shouldnt take too much of a hit. Im just worried, will it still skim once its turned on?

i don't see why not - start up may cause and overflow or may take a while to get going with proper bubble size etc - lots of skimmers do not really like to be interuppted in that proper bubble formation takes a little while to achieve - you can just try it and see

The ones Im lookin at I think rely on an airstone, so I dont think the bubble size will vary too too much.
Thanks, Danny |

Your skimmer is supplying the oxygenation of your water as well as its waste removal task. I would approach this carefully.

might take a long time for it to break in also if you cut it off every night

I dont mind running it full for a couple of weeks to break it in.
Oxygen is being provided to my tank through surface agitation, my Rio is pointed a bit towards the surface, causing a lot of ripples. |

I run mine only at night, due to it being a HOB and me not wanting the noise/bubbles during the day when i may be in the room - I figure I get plenty of aeration without it, seeing as i designed my system with a reputable LFS to run without a skimmer at all, before i found someone looking to get rid of theirs. i don't see any less/differnet skimmate than when i ran it 24/7 (well, i get less skimmate, but that is to be expected... I am actually getting 50-75% the 24/7 skimamte running 12/7, FWIW)
