Its funny how so many people are really worried about this thing. Did you hear that CERN was receiving death threats and has like 100 lawsuits against them so they don't get this thing going.

All I did was google it and I got enough information to not only feel comfortable about it, but be excited about it and be able to talk about it without sounding like an idiot. Could be the greatest invention this century.

You would.

Yeah it poured all weekend so I couldn't empty out the garage to get started. My glass hole saws are on the way though, and should be here in a few days.

Well got the hole saws a few days ago, and have been practicing on a 15g tank... I must say... not going well as of yet.

After 2 shots I was good at keeping the bit from "walking" but still haven't been able to get a clean cut through the glass.

It's going to be a while before I even think of attempt this on the 220.

I think I know what the issue is though... The back of the bit that goes into the chuck is too large, so I can't insert it the whole way. I think this is making the bit spin a little wobbly as I'm cutting, and causing the bubbles/chips around the edges of the hole.

I thought you were going to build a jig to keep the holes in line and hold the bit like Harold suggested? Wouldn't that help with the jumpy bit?

It works for me. There is always a little splintering on breakthrough on the inside, but my outside edges are smooth and free of any defects. I like to start my holes with the bit perpendicular to the glass to prevent chipping. I'm not a fan of tipping the bit to start the holes, It's bitten me in the butt before so I just dont do it. See if you can get some scraps of thicker glass to practice on from a local glass shop. With the thicker glass, drilling off vertical will cause problems the deeper you go in the glass. Remember you're bits are brand new and have sharp edges. After drilling a hole, or two, or three I find the bit cuts a little smoother from wearing off the high spots on the bit. Let the bit do the cutting DONT push hard on the drill. The thin glass will deflect causing stress in the glass and cause it to splinter and chip as you drill it. Think of it as grinding glass and not actually cutting it.

Duct tape on the back of the hole that you are cutting will help as well.

On the 220 I will, for practice I was trying free-hand. I just cut another hole this morning, and I had the bit take off once when I started, but other than that, the hole was perfect and no bubbles or chips coming through the other end.

Hey TJ I use a dremel with a dimond bit to round off the chips and splinters so it looks all clean around the edges also make it less stress on the whole chips are more likely to crack down the road but a smooth clean hole will last longer with less chance off a runner ..... Just a few tricks ive learned along the way

I made a very simple jig to drill my tanks. I bought a hole saw for wood that was the same size as the diamond bit. I drilled a hole through veneer core ply (not particle or MDF core) and used that as my jig. It worked great.

YMMV

Well I got bold, and decided to put my practice to the test.

I drilled my 30g QT tank... and it came out GREAT.

Nice tip... I was wondering what I could do to address that. So what are you doing next weekend.

I think I'm going to attempt the closed loop holes later this week. Just the output holes... So 6 - 1" holes...
