Thinking about switching my 400 bulb out for 2 250 watt halides. Similar usage and better spread.

Was doing some water tests and looking around today. I have these button polyps from when I had a softy and lps tank that I still have on some rock. Well my c-ward tricolor was looking a little upset so I inspected it closer and look what I found.

The polyps had gotten close to the sps but I didn't see much irritation until today. I shot some water at the palys to get them to shrink and it looks like they have grown ONTO a few branches of the tri-color and irritated a few other pieces. I need to find a way to control these palys back some..

Question on water flow for sps people. So in my tank (240) I currently have 2 mp40's and a gyre 150 plus my return pump. So a decent amount of flow per say....but here lies my question, "I have an internal overflow that is about 30 inches or so, so that leaves me rough 9 inches on each side to place a pump and the gyre is on the overflow box. While I have numerically decent flow, with the limited space for the mp40's they don't provide much flow over any corals. More or less down the side panes of the tank. The tank is walk around so I don't have many other options to put the pumps on other sides (cube tank). So is this flow into open water space as good as, worse, or indifferent then having flow directly over said coral?" I ask because I might alter some rock work if need be but it would be a major pain to do so, or if it's indifferent then I'll leave it as it is. I want to try and address the issue now before things really start growing and it becomes an issue.

Merry Christmas to all!! I hope you all have a blessed day and enjoy your time with family and loved ones!!

Did anyone get anything cool for their reef tanks? My reef tank was the winner this year, it must have been on e good list (weird-because if we base good off sps growth.....it's been pretty bad lately. )
but for my tank I upgraded my lights from a single 400 to 2 250 watt bulbs (long live halides)!!!! Few more vortech mp40's and a frag pack coming via mail this week!

Post what hat you got for your tank(s) if you'd like. I'm always curious what others do for their tanks too.

Corey, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you as well! Congrats on the new lights!! They look great.

Nothing new for the tank for Christmas besides the new tankmates still getting settled in from after completing QT in November.

Now you have me thinking I should probably get the tank something for belated Christmas (good excuse for some new toys!). I got the cat and dogs presents, how did I forget the tank? Haha

Not sure if this is the case or not, but I have a few blue damsel fish in my tank and it looks like this one has laid eggs on my overflow box. Doesn't leave the area and very protective of the area.

Isn't stuff like that fun? Best part of the hobby when something affirms your husbandry like that.

Lets see these new corals!

Just noticed that one of my drain pipes has no water running through it. No clue when this started or why and I'm looking for the issue. Any ideas? I can't imagine anything got stuck in it because they have tops on them with very small opening around the pipe, the openings are not clogged. I checked.

Could be air that doesn't have enough pressure to be purged if it exists underwater or has horizontal runs? Could try plugging the other drains and increasing water level in the overflow area to see if it'll build enough pressure to clear the line..

Weird....so I'm waiting for a new 250 ballast and currently running a 400 watt 10k XM bulb on one side of the tank and a 250 watt 20k pulsrite bulb on the other. The side with the pulsrite has started to grow cyano which is odd. I don have that issue in the tank. Anyone else have this issue, or could this be not related to the light.

not sure what is going on, but it is starting to grow cyano on another spot in my tank on the same side. my auto feeder fell in the tank so i feed only once a day if that now.
i am running algae scrubber but only like 13 hours a day and pellets. however, the pellets have gotten low in the reactor and i wonder if that could be part of the issue. i need to replace the pellets or up the light period on the scrubber.

Tank has been on auto cruise for last 2 months. I have been and still am in Puerto Rico helping restore power (electric) to the people after the hurricanes last fall. Nothing has died in my tank but I'm not sure how much growth I have gotten from the pictures. I hope it's growing my sps like weeds!
Should be home soon to get it back in order though!
I do think my ph is low and my mag is low too. I had it tested few weeks ago from a friend and i am curious about the pH since my apartment is small and the windows are closed up for the winter.

Well, I sent in a water sample to triton and am curious to see the results.
I haven't been getting steady growth lately and my parameters have been pretty stable albeit my Alk does move from 8-9 but I'm not sure that is the issue.
Then I noticed a few corals growing and a few dying and I'm at a loss for fixing the issues. I hope the water turns out fine the I can eliminate that as an issue, or if it comes back out of whack I know where the issue is.

The only reason I switched over was because the tank is eurobraced and I wanted no cables hanging out of the tank. Prior to that I was diehard tunze fan and I still am but I needed to obtain a certain look. Had I ever go back to a set up that would allow me to use them, I would. But I must admit, I do enjoy the vortechs and the few hiccups I've had, ecotech has stepped up and made them right.

Goy my results from triton back.

Maybe a little help reading them though as I'm not fluent in all science.

Cleaned my Skimmer neck and pump today as well quick shot midway thru cleaning.
Numbers am to have balanced out since I've been back but I did have a few more casualties for some reason. Going things are going forward from here on.

Few pictures as it’s been awhile. Hands out of the tank and just letting it grow.
