It's totally interesting to check out the different sites, even with livestock I'm not interested in.
Thank you so much to everyone posting information.

Great info. The wife is adamant about buying fish that are captive bread. However, where we live we don't have a good selection of fish let alone captive bread...

Is there a web based site that deals solely in or even majority of captive bread?

This is an emerging/growing part of the hobby. The only one I can think of off-hand is Sustainable Aquatics. I have not bought from them personally, but I do admire their conviction, particularly in a fickle hobby.

There's just not enough fish available yet. I know there are a myriad of people trying to breed a variety of fish and inverts, but the success rate is meager at this point. A lot of work has been put into breeding cleaner shrimp, but as far as I know, no consistent success has been reported.

However, with your wife's leanings, there's no reason you can't set up a sweet reef with anemones and clownfish as a start. It could be nearly a "species" tank, but keep in mind that anemones require a lot of light to stay in one place, and in general are not coral friendly. I have them in my tank and it can be quite challenging to grow corals and anemones side-by-side.

My "parent" GBTA has grown to grotesque proportions and is taking up some serious real estate. So is my PLTA. But, I find the symbiotic relationships of the reef to be very interesting so I am more willing than most to handle the risk. Because I am using 1000W lamps, my anemones stay put, on the bottom, and it is extremely rare for one to move at all.

That is not the case in most reef systems so beware!

Good luck!

Interesting list. It would be helpful to have an update, if someone has the time.

Is there some way to have editable list, so everyone can contribute?

That would mean changing the edit window to forever for all members/all posts. That's not something we're willing to do, sorry.

Something like a wiki would be useful in situations like this.

I believe ORA is doing frozen food eating Mandarin Dragonettes as well, which I think is huge!

Is there any way to check whether the source of fish/inverts that you buy are captive bred or from the wild? Is there a certifying organization for example?

I bought a bubble tip anemone from liveaquaria and they shipped it to me with almost no water, it made me nervous but its doing great. Sure enough as soon as I got it all the local stores started having them in stock again which I would have preferred.

The 2 clowns I have came from Proaquatix through a local store they are doing great but its funny how their almost a clear difference between the body types of ORA and proaquatix. Im thinking about adding a paid of ORA Naked Clowns those are really cool and not as expensive as the platinum clowns.

Real Reef Rock

Thank you so much to everyone posting information.
I recently saw this real reef rock, all purple rock that is man made and cultured but the problem is its 2x the price of the regular live rock so I dont think that many people will be going for it at like $10/lb. Although its sustainable, the sustainable stuff ultimately has got to be close to the same price of the regular fish/coral/rock so that people will buy it. I like those little ORA mandarin gobys but i have to admit i bought the wild caught mandarin for half the price because I couldnt spend almost $50 on the ORA one which was sustainable.

There are sometimes captive-propagated anemones available other than the three that I listed, but it is very rare to find any other species captive-propagated, and even the ones that I listed can be hard to find.

Peppermint shrimp- Lysmata wurdemanni (Peppermint shrimp are not yet available, but should be soon. A few months before I wrote this, a wholesaler had some captive-bred peppermint shrimp in grow-out.)
Assorted Snails
Upsidedown Jellyfish- Cassiopea frondosa (The scientific name I give here assumes that the wholesaler uses the same common names as I do. This particular species may or may not be available. If it is not, the most likely alternative would be the Mangrove Upsidedown Jellyfish (Cassiopea xamachana).)

Feel free to post questions, comments, or additions to the list.

Any updates on where to buy captive bred fish? I see ORA and proaquatix are still in business but ORA looks like wholesale only? I didn't see any CB on inland aquatics site. The project dibs website is gone.

I haven't had occasion to this myself yet, but I think if you email both ORA and Sustainable Aquatics they will guide you toward dealers near you. Also Blue Zoo Aquatics has a decently sized list of tank raised (not necessarily captive bred) fish. I'm new in the hobby, just starting out so I haven't actually purchased from any of these places yet, but my plan is to stock only CB/TR when the time comes so I've been doing a lot of reading.

I was thrilled to find that my LFS stocks both ORA and SA

I just got a tiny Tiger Blenny that was tank bred. So small it's still mostly clear. Doing really well though.

Could you add a list of the Captive Breeders to the front as well? Finding where to get CB is half the battle.
Places I know of:
Bali Aquarich
Biota
Blue Zoo Aquatics
Inland Aquatics
ORA
Proaquatix
Sea and Reef
Sustainable Aquatics
And some other captive breeding resources Frank's research on captive breeding
Marine Breeding Initiative

Is there a way of determining if your fish is CB or from the wild?
