Question....
Was thinking of turning the mantis tank into a reef tank... can I have them in a tank without a top? has anyone had an issue of them trying to jump out?

Ye, the only time I thought it might jump was when I dropped a crab in it flew towards the surface then divebombed the crab

Mine has been turned into an LPS reef. I'm really happy with it.
Murder shrimp is happy too. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Jumping is a really big issue with mantis shrimp surprisingly. You could be lucky, but its not worth risking.
A lot of people here lost mantis shrimp from jumping, I didn't lose one from jumping but I've had my L. Maculata even swim straight out of the water the moment it saw an opening, good thing it fell right back in. An O. Scyllarus jumped out of a bucket to try and strike me when I checked on it, was pretty ****ed that I was relocating it to say the least. Stomatopods are very observant and opportunistic creatures that will see an opening and take the opportunity to see what's out there, that or get spooked. Reef wise no problem, lighting is iffy but with good water quality (which is assumingly there for the coral) its nothing to concern with provided hiding places. Would never have a mantis shrimp without a top however, you could option for an eggcrate similarly used for ceiling fans if you want a screen that easily removable but opens enough gas exchange. (@Jlentz, gorgeous! )

I'd have a net top if I was concerned about it. I figure ~20" is ok, I've never seen him get within 6" of the surface. I have more issues with my wrasses. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Well I have a JBJ frag tank that he would look beautiful in but it is an open top so I wanted to make sure I do it right. Don't want him chasing my dogs.

Different species ans sizes of stomatopods vary in their ability and tendency tojump.. Odontodactylus, particularly small ones, are the worst I've had a 6 cm O. brevirostris clear over 10 cm.
