Marine pure in Refuge?
Has anyone used marine pure block in their refuge? Got mixed results when I researched it online.

You could also use something called Pond Matrix I have heard good things about. It's just porous media that the bacteria colonize.

I have one that sits under my ball of chaeto and next to about 20lbs of live rock. It's in the lowest flow part of my sump. I have only had it for about 2 weeks so I can't testify to results, but I can't imagine how or why it would work any differently there than anywhere else. I also think that it must be a fantastic home for the smaller copepods.

I have it covering the entire bottom of the fuge area in my sump. I had rock rubble previously and went with the marine pure when I rebuilt simply because it has much more surface area.

I have my sump filled with marine pure and pond matrix. I made with baskets out of eggcrate to hold it. I swish them around in old tank water every now and then to get rid of surface crud. Not sure thats needed.

Never remove it to try & clean it. Microbes & macro critters like worms, feather dusters, pods etc, will keep it clean & will make a home of it. The fact that these organisms will populate the block is what will make it more efficient. Also, monitor aluminium levels, or increase water change volumes.
