New setup overflow question - Herbie

I am setting up a new 160 gallon tank. It comes with a center overflow box with two pre-drilled holes on the bottom of the tank (inside overflow box). The holes are designed to be a durso drain (1.5) and a return (1.0).
Here is my question: Can I set it up as a Herbie and use the 1.5 as the main drain and the 1.0 as the emergency?

U can definitely set it up as a herbie but u will want to use the 1” for the syphon & the 1.5” for the emergency.

Thank you Lsufan. What is the reason for that?

If u use the 1.5” for the syphon then u may get to a point to where it is handling more flow then which the 1” can handle. So if the 1.5” gets clogged & the 1” can’t handle all of the flow u will have a flood.

Redunctancy aside, I would still rather use the 1” for the syphon. Under the right circumstances a 1” syphon can handle close to 2,000 gph which is probably way more then u will have anyway. Plus if u run a trickle through the emergency, the 1.5” will be able to handle more flunctuation in the system & remain quiet. The smaller the overflow box the more it happens but the overflow will flunctuate some. If u have a 1” emergency & u run a trickle through it, any flunctuation u will have to tune on the valve to get it back quit because a 1” pipe can’t handle much flow & remain quiet. That same flunctuation with a 1.5” pipe & u may not have to tune on the valve because the 1.5” may be able to handle it & remain quiet. If a drain has air in it like the emergency will a 1.5” can handle quite a bit more flow then a 1” & be quiet.

Thank you. That makes a lot of sense to me. My old tank just had a durso so the Herbie is new to me.
