I have a retrofit from RapidLEDs with a Typhon controller in my 12g NanoCube.
You can control intensity along with start/end times and the duration of the ramping up and down of the LEDs' intensity. Pretty sure Steve's LEDs come with the same features/functions.

Hi Jen! You can also look at videos on youtube with Steves, Rapids, Nanobox, etc on biocubes that are fun to look at to get some ideas.

If it were me and I had to do it again, RapidLED would be my go to again.
Rapid's customer service is second to none, and they will answer every question you have and even point you in the right direction on what you want for a setup. It may be a little more expensive then the other options, but someone holding your hand and walking you through an install or even what to buy is worth the extra $$. Just because you wanted to see a full grown up duncan colony. This started as 2 little heads about 2 years ago(you can see the original frag in my biocube build thread). It's now well over 50 heads.

In my build thread you can see how the rapid retrofit kit works if your interested.
Every email, every phone call, every question I had was answered promptly and with precision. RapidLED IMO is the goto for biocube retrofit kits.

They have several retrofit kits, I opted for the aurora kit. Safe, simple install(even a DIY n00b could do it), and it has all the color and intensity you would need even for the most light demanding SPS.

The only thing I did not like about the aurora puck was being that it is so small, the middle of the tank has a super bright spot. Where as like reefwreak, his retofit kit is has the LED's spread out over the heatsink. If you read my build thread you will discover I ended up adding more LED's to the sides of the heatsink.
Another good source for the difference in the retrofit kits is reefwreaks build thread. His has the LED's spread out over the heatsink on individual starboards. The advantage to that is you can swap out the LED's if you don't like the look, or your corals don't like the combination of the light.

I have the steves led 14k kit for my bc29. It's a great light. Just today I finally have the blues running 100% and whites at 55%. Looks good. My only issue with it is I have an acro in the front middle of the tank that doesn't get any light on the front/bottomish and has like zero color cause of the shading. Needs some sort of relector. Other than that, rest of the corals are growing nicely. It was easy to install and didn't really need much hood modification. Dremmel tool has became really handy. Tech support had been really helpful and responsive when I had an issue.
Lots of good kits can't really go wrong with any of them. Tank is looking good! Good luck! |

Ok so a few new family members...I have added Crusher the emerald crab, Bubble Gum the purple firefish, Pete the little cherub angel, and Benny the Lawnmower Blenny. I love them all.....they all have great personalities. I am going to try and post some videos.

Ugh...still haven't decided on what light to get or if to get one at all.
But on another note, I finally got a RBTA....she is pretty sweet. Of course she went to a spot that is a little far for my liking but oh well, I can at least see her and she seems to be doing great, eating and coming out a bit more which is awesome. Now if only Spike and Molly would notice her. |

Okay, so here's what I did with my lighting. I didn't necessarily have any issues with the watts/output, but more so the appearance of the bright white lighting on channel 1. I added a blue submersible LED light strip (on the top) from the LFS (I believe it's a Coralife). It has a bracket with suction cups and stays in place nicely. I paid $60 for this part of it. I then added 18' of LED tape lighting (from Home Depot) using the adhesive strip that comes on it and reef glue at the corners to keep it secure. It has a remote control that allows you to change the colors (any color), but I prefer the blue or purple setting. Paid $70 for the kit. So I'm in to the lighting now for $130, but the colors of my corals and fish look way better and it achieved exactly what I wanted! The only downside to doing it this was is that they are manual and aren't on the same timer as my other channels. Just another option for you to try as well
