Mr. Holmes-Farley quick Question

Have you ever tested different depths of what we test for;

i.e. nitrates test higher at the bottom of the tank, alk, CA Mg...

Just curious, as we as hobbiest will typically test our water at the easiest place to get water (the top level) while we hopefully run a lot of flow this shouldn't matter. That being said, I'm curious if there is a difference in depth in our testing depths.

Aslo, I want to thank you for all you've done for this hobby. I've been doing SW fow more years than I care to admit, your help with reef chemistry for my last eight or so years has greatly benefited me and many other reefers.

Your knowledge and real concern to learn, teach and help others mean more than anyone could ever thank you for, my hat is off for you sir.

The flow in any of our tanks is so high that testing at different levels of the water column isn't useful. You might be able to find nooks and crannies inside live rock that are a bit different, but getting a sample without contaminating it would be difficult to impossible with hobbyist equipment.

Jonathan,

Thank you, that was my thinking as well, not being a chemist... I thought
i would ask rather than just try using common sense.

Appreciate you taking the time to respond

R

even with no flow at all, the small soluble molecules we test for would be evenly distributed. its not like dissolved nitrate, phosphate, or any other ion would settle out.

Just to beat a dead horse, nothing will be different anywhere within the water column of a reef tank with the water moving reasonably.

Places where flow is very restricted, like in the sand or inside of live rock, the concentrations of things can and will vary a lot.

For example, pH likely drops as you penetrate into a deep sand bed.
