Moving a reef tank

Dear Reef Central Members,

I need to move a full reef tank about 3-4 feet in order to replace it with the new one. I can drain about 3/4 of the water out prior to the move and its only a 70 gallon tank.

Any ideas?

Thank you!

Tanner

I would empty it completely. You say you're going to take out 3/4 of the water out. That means about 17 gallons left in it, so about 146.3 lbs of water plus the weight of the tank, what's in it, and presumably the stand.

Unless you have a few people to help, you should empty it.

I would definitely empty it. I've heard horror stories of seals breaking from moving tanks with water in them and there being a disaster. Could you empty the rock, water, and fish into a rubbermaid tub in a seperate part of the house until you get the new tank up and running?

I would just slide it.

Not the same tank size, but when I upgraded from my biocube, i simply removed as much water as possible then pushed on the bottom of the stand to slide it across the floor about 10 feet(still weighed way over 100 pounds). Only issue was it was on carpet and caused the padding underneath to bunch up.

What is the stand made out of?

I think it would be fine to slide a steel frame stand, but I'd be nervous sliding a wood stand.

Sahin just did this in his latest build thread and he goes over his process, pretty good read if you are getting ready to do this.
