Thanks Nick and Fishman!
Just before 2012 ended we went on a short shopping-trip to some German suppliers (www.whitecorals.de, www.extremecorals.de and www.korallenfarm.de). The first two offer a very nice selection of corals which were mainly imported. The last one offers, apart from some imported lps and fish, solely 'homegrown' corals. Feeling like a kid in the candy store! I took a short video of the last store... Happy newyear everybody! |

Thanks.
And a new one. Newcomers: one more C. mitratus and 5 female Pseudanthias bartlettorum. Somehow (at least at this moment) it seems I can't embed the video, here is the direct link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TCVzejUcmbA

I took some new shots today. The butterflies (C. mitratus) are doing fine and are leaving the giant T. squamosa a bit more...
Overview Blue squamosa Aussie A. horrida Fish begging for food Yesterday I shot a new video of the 6-m Tank which was featured here on RC (and as TOTM) before:

Tanu,
Beautiful! Is Pieter able to get that butterfly to take prepared food or does it just feed on coral polyps? Thanks for posting these videos. |

Jack, thanks!
Chooch1: so far I understood the butterflies (he has a pair) only eats coral polyps, but they do show interest in frozen Mysis. Interest is of course not enough. Keep in mind the tank itself contains about 2000 gallons so the damage of the bf's is spread over a huge amount of corals. Pieter thinks they also remove parasites from the corals, he sees no serious damage. It is truely special to see these fish in a healthy state in such a tank...

WOW!
Amazing Tank! How do you keep your corals so colorful? Zeovit? I am planning a 140Gallon Tank and have been considering Zeovit but it seems complex. |

Thanks Gordon. I have used zeovit for a few years, but it was too much work in my opinion. Especially during holidays there was, in my opinion, not enough room in the tank's balance to withstand small mistakes made by the persons who take care of my tank when I am on holiday.
I did switch back to the Berlin system, to add more stability to the system I did automate the dosing of the Balling Salts and trace elements (Grotech ABC is what I mainly use). To keep nutrients in balance I use some biopellets and a minor amount of iron-based phosphateremover. Next to this, water changes (I mainly use Tropic Marin salts and Reef crystals, every now and then some NSW from the coast here) do the trick. Water quality, current and stability are the main factors, combined with good quality lighting of course. I don't mind if a certain value is a bit too high or too low, as long as that parameter is stable. As light I use Orphek Atlantiks since March this year, in more than 20 years reefkeeping this is the best light I have ever had. (having had multiple setups with combinations of T5, T8, HQI and led). Together with the Bubble King skimmer which I bought in February 2005, this is the piece of equipment which made the biggest positive change in my reefing carrier. Good luck setting up your own tank, do you have a thread or pictures of your current tank?
