Any medication tips for reef tank?
Hi all,
I am new to the hobby (4 mos) and have a nice 75g reef setup. I have about 10 corals and frags and 8 fish. I just bought a powder brown tang and he has just show signs of ick. In the past I had a blue hippo who died due to ick and then 3 other fish died but it did not seem as though it was due to ick. I treated the tank with Melafix and Pimafix but it left a green coat on some of my live rock. In any case, I am ready to do so again but does anyone have a display tank medication tactic that is reef safe? I have looked everywhere but all I can find is remove and medicate. Is that the only option? 75 Gal reef 4 T5s Skimmer 2 Powerheads 80 lbs LR 80 lbs LS |

Yeah pretty much. As daunting as it sounds, it's really your best option if you don't want to keep buying fish and watching them die. Reef safe remedies don't work, period. Don't waste your money. Whatever "studies" they have done are complete b.s., otherwise none of us would worry about getting ich in our display tanks. So you'll obviously need a quarantine tank, some kind of non-calcareous filtration for it like the biggest sponge filter you can find. Make sure it's fully cycled before you add anything. In the meantime, do plenty of water changes on your display to keep parameters where they should be. Feed well. Then, when the qt is ready, transfer all livestock and treat with cupramine for 4-6 weeks (more is better). Or, alternatively, you could try quinine or cholroquine sulfate. Good luck.
