Xenia not doing well
Hello,
My Xenia is not doing well at all since already a month. It was added in my tank beginning of March and was doing well immediatly. Im not very sure but I think its after I added a chaeto mid-march in my sump that the Xenia started not looking good, do you think it can be related ? Anyone with similar experience ? |

Xenia does like dirtier water than most coral. From the pic you've got an algae problem. Chaeto will also compete for the same nutrients. Likely the xenia is being out competed by the algae and macro.
You need to get some test results even though they will be skewed by the fact they are being taken up quickly by the algae/macro. How old is this tank? Was it started with dry base rock or dry live rock or wet live rock?

Here are the results using Salifert test kit :
Calcium : 435 Magnesium : 1275 KH : 6.7 Nitrate, nitrite, ammonia : 0 Phosphate : 0 Currently in tank : no fish, few invert, one dendrophyllia and one clove polyp coral. By the way GHA and bryopsis you see in pics cover a large part of my LR but it has been already two weeks they started to become light green, white color, but still not dead, the same for chaeto. The tank was started end of January of this year. It was started with wet live rock. |

By the way, the clove polyps and dendrophyllia corals are doing fine.

Im feeding only dendrophylia with mysis shrimp, other than that tank get not food so I think water is clean.

IME Xenia can be very temperamental sometimes. A lot of people consider them a weed & prefer "dirty" water, but I've seen them thriving up top right next to various sps corals many times before. Weird!

They need iodine as well. I would think water changes would keep up with any iodine problems, but it's something else you might want to check.

+1 to iodine (iodide) overall, I have found keeping iodide in the column at .03-.06 on a continuous basis beneficial to many softies, gorgonians, and shrimps.
These are the numbers found in NSW. |
