powerhead outside the tank
i remember there was a power head that the entire powerhead was outside of the tank, and only the blade was on the inside and spun with magnets.
its not the one that is like 400 dollars with the wavemaker and other stuff, it was just a basic powerhead, but the bulk was on the outside. can anyone help me out on the name of this. i cant remember for the life of me.

Yeah I have only seen vortechs operate this way, possibly due to patents..

The Jebaos are the cheap knock-offs of the Vortechs. Leaves a bad taste in my mouth just to say that name... Purchase and use at your own risk.

I don't believe the Jebao knockoffs have the motor outside of the tank, they only have the magnet outside of the tank. If we are thinking of the same one that is.
Only ones I know where the electrical connection is on the dry side of the glass is the Ecotech ones. |

They aren't anything like the Vortech pumps. They copied the Tunze powerheads.

There are a lot of Jebao hatters out there, but I have 3 pumps running with no issues for over 2 years now and I bought 2 of them used. And I do very little pump maintenance.
I did have 1 go out after a year and again it was used when I bought it. If you are reefing on a budget they are the way to go. |

Jebao powerheads (PP series) and return pump (DCS series) have been working great for me... The WP and RW powerheads were crap..

he wants the power chord outside the tank, so all this chatter about Jebao is irrelevant

Tunze used to make some. I have 4 of them I am not using. I was thinking about possibly modifying 2 to mimic wave pumps.

there is a reason vortech is the only one, they have a patent on the tech. Reef octopus has a similar pump but none will have the power supply outside the tank with magnet drive through the glass. ( not in north america anyways while the patent is still active )

Post a photo of them. Unless some prototype never marketed or sold only the mounting magnet is dry. The motor is in the tank as is the cord from it.

Ah. No need for the photos. The OP asked about knock-off Vortech.

I don't know how in the world vortech got a paten for this idea. This technology has been around 50 years. When I was a kid I had a filter that had the motor on the bottom of a filter with a magnet attached to the shaft. It had an impeller with a magnet on the inside. Same exact idea as the vortech. It was called a dynaflow….any of you old timers remember this filter.....?????

Not that it matters, the op said nothing about vortech.
The pumps I was referring to are Tunze 2002's. Here is a photo of 2 of them. The output can be rotated any way you wish and has a deflector attachment as well. The one on the left is assembled minus the mounting brackets. The one on the right is dissambled, including mounting brackets. I was thinking it might be cool to mount a vertical blade like a Maxsprct Gyre on it. So if anyone has a dead Gyre I would be interested in the parts. Quote:

But wow that's old school! I used to have two. There was another company I think that had a knockoff of those. They were black. That was when I started my DIY stuff. Somehow got it to rotate like a sea-swirl. I feel like that motor at the top had to be partially submerged with just the top bit above the waterline? Man, haven't seen a pic of those in a long time!
