25 Nov 2016 - what i talk about when i talk about UV

Recently i heard of a few reefers tank was attacked by ich. It was a slow and painful process (i think) which lasted few weeks. In one case, it ended when the last fish, a beautiful angel, was killed by the ich.

I have advised many reefers to get an UV if they are really interested in keeping (reasonable number or more) fishes. The feeling of not having to worry about ich itself when introducing new fish is already worth way way more than the cost of a set of UV or two.

There are two main factors to remember when choosing any UV: contact time and contact time. UV can't kill **** if the water flow through it is very short.

From what I recalled, 4.x seconds is enough to kill vast majority of any parasites/ bacteria/ algae. Thus, slower flow is surely better in this case.

The other important about using UV is to change the bulb every 6 months (or as recommended). Please do not be lazy or cheap or both.

For the record, i have not encounter any ich eversince i use 2*9w UV for my 100l tank. Ich free since Mar 2015.

So please buy a few corals lesser and go get your UV. For your future fish and for clearer water.

Happy reefing.

24 Dec 2016 - what i talk about when i talk about reefers

As a reefer who reefed from 2004 to 2007 and 2014 to present, i have the advantage of being through the "old school" ways of reefing and the current school.

Technically speaking, current reefers are on a much easier reefing landscape compares to 2004. Bio-pellets, LED, wavemaker with advanced features, etc are easily available to reefers nowadays.

However, the knowledge and skill of current reefers (in general) are way way inferior compares to reefers of old time.

Back then, reefers used to research, read books, share information before they even buy the first livestocks. Their reefing knowledge are, without question, more all rounder than nowadays reefers.

2016 reefers? I have overheard more than once in LFS when seasoned reefers look at anemone and ask it is a LPS? look at an unique anthais and ask it is a hawkfish? Running around asking why their tank PH is 7...

No wonder LFS is laughing all the ways to the bank...

07 Jan 2017 -- Happy New (Reefing) Year

Rehomed my salfin tang, neon dotty back, blue tang and clown tang in last few weeks. It was the third rehome exercise in 2016 alone, and I promised myself I wont be rehoming any fish in 2017 (the current fish sizes shall be good enough for my tank for another year).

Added in a smaller clown tang (3cm) and a pair of blue tang (2cm). Very happy with my current fish now. Hopefully 2017 is gonna be a no more new fish year for me.

22 Feb 2017 - What I talk about when I talk about dosing (trace elements)

As with most reefing things, there are two schools of thought on dosing trace elements:

1) you dont need to dose as your Water Change/ fish food/ fish waste/ etc are enough
2) dosing somethings is always better than nothing

I have been dosing grotech ABC for almost a year before switching to FM Red Purple Green for about another year. I have stopped dosing for three months (Nov 2016 to end Jan 2017) just to see the difference (or lack of) to my tank.

Since beginning of this month (Feb 2017) I have resume dosing FM Red Purple (no Green) and intend to continue for the next three months.

My observations from the three months of not dosing:

1) Green remain almost as good as when I dose
2) Purple becomes pale(r) compares to when I dose
3) Red becomes pale(r) compares to when I dose

That is also the reason why I have decided to dose only Red Purple for the coming three months...

Details of my tank and routine:

1) Water volumn 100l (about 25G)
2) Salt used - TM Pro Reef
3) WC routine - weekly about 20% to 25%
4) dosage (current) - 2ml Red on Mon, 2ml Purple on Thurs

Stay tuned for my observation (on end April 2017)

Till then, happy reefing.

Please let us know how the Angels behaved with your corals and clam. And did their behavior change as they grew. Nice photos

Hi! bro. From what i observed in my tank, angels are more interested in brain, prata, acan type of "meaty" LPS.

As for zoas and sps, they hardly touch them. Of cos, sps PE will be less in day time if the angels nip that particular sps.

12 May 2017 - peace

How funny things can changed for LFS. A "good" LFS can fall in reefers eyes from 5 stars to 1 star just after few overpriced shipments while the same old overpriced LFS keeps its followers despite selling $$$$ above market price.

What a wonderful hobby.

Anyway, time to say hello to my fishes.
