Sicce vs Tunze vs Koralia
Looking to set up my first salt water tank. Its going to be 50g and I am not sure how much flow I need or what power heads to use to get the flow. I am looking at the 3 power heads in the title.
Sicce Voyager 2 Pump x2 or Tunze Turbelle® nanostream® 6025 x2 or Hydor Koralia Evolution 750 x2 Which of these would be best? or do I need more flow? Any or suggestions or info would be great. Thanks |

of those 3, my vote is for the Tunze. But I would go for 2 MP10s if it was my tank

Tunze. I've been running two of the 6025's and two 6065's in a 180 mixed reef tank for years, with no complaints.

Tunze is by far the best of the 3, with 2 years of some of the best service around
If you have a couple extra bucks, consider the 6045. Ther adjustable from roughly 400 to 1200 gph. What are the dimensions of the tank? What is the aquascaping going to be like?

I was going to have my rock high in the middle to cover most of the overflow and thought of having one power head on each side of the overflow blowing out to the sides. |

That's what I thought. Then I would agree with Jim, upgrade to the 6045's and depending on what you plan to keep you may want to add a third.

Sorry got the measurements wrong. I was going to get a 40g breeder but they didnt have any predrilled. So I order a 50g which is just about the same as a 40b just slightly bigger in all directions. Not sure exact measurements at the moment.

Why does everyone push Vortechs? I think 2 6045s would be great in that tank. I use Koralias myself, but only because I've had them forever and they won't break. When they do, I'm going to look into Tunze's for my tank as well.

Thanks for the help all. Tunze it is then. I will see if I can find a good deal on the 6045s and get 2. From what I can tell they are never on sale, it always the koralias.
Would I be able to run these full out or will that make a mess of my tank, blowing sand everywhere? |

You should be able to run them wide open.

I have had all three during my reef experience and right now in my new tank I am using the Sicce Voyager 2 Pump which is rated at 800 gph. I wanted to get the Vortech but didn't because when I had the MP40 I never used all the features. You can't go wrong with the Tunze, the build quality and the gph ratings are terrific - word of caution be careful around the magnet mounts they are strong magnets.
The Sicce is fine, there is nothing over the top about it's performance or features, I would classify it as a bit of a baseline unit. If you don't like the electrical cords in the water and want to really control the flow by just the push of the powerhead then Vortech, but that is a lot of money in my mind. If you have the money then Tunze, but if you want to start with something just to get going knowing you will change later then I would recommend the Sicce, never cared for the Koralia for the build, the ease of cleaning, etc. always seemed a bit fussy to me. Good luck with your choice, in earnest either three are fine it really is what is that balance between cost, features and performance you are looking for. Flow: typical mixed reef to me, you are looking about 20x flow. So you need to bring into the total calculation your return pump flow as well as the powerbeads. Are you going to have a sump? I am going to run a sump. I am looking at a 29g tank so probably 20 more use able gallons to the 50g DT. Looking at an eheim compact 2000 for return pump.

i will put in another vote for tunze 6045's.
I have been running 2 older 6000's and 1 6100 for over 10 years and they don't seem to wanna slow down. still as silent as the day I got them. had a couple 6025's and loved them in my smaller tank but sold them when I took it down.

if it was me, keep an eye out for a set of used tunze 6055's and a controller for around $325-$350. I find you tend to buy stuff twice in this hobby. at least with the tunze, you have excellent service, excellent resell value. i have close to the same dims, and i run a pair of tunze 6095's, absolutely love em.
german made quality. |
