my tank gurgles...how do i fix it?
so my overflow is simply a 90 degree piece of pvc covered by a cap to prevent animals from going down. it leads to some tubing going about 2.5 ft to my sump. it gurgles non-stop and since its in my bedroom i have to fix it (so my roommate doesn't kill me haha). i know it has something to do with air in the tube, but i don't know how to fix it. what can i do? thanks!

if the drain pipe goes below the water level in your sump it will create back pressure and make it do that.

Siphon drain. Look @ beananimals overflow. if u dont have a siphon controlled drain=tank will b noisy. Some deal with the noise but if u want a silent tank siphon drain will do it.

There are a lot threads dealing with making drains quiet. A lot of people have their own special trick that is guaranteed to work. I have a couple of Durso standpipes in my 110. There are modified durso designs as well as many other designs. Google 'durso standpipe' and you'll find info on dursos, modified dursos, stockmans and others.

I do the same thing with both of my tanks and have found that if you use a strainer or even some gutter gaurd it will greatly reduce the noise. My 30gal has a strainer on it and it is completely silent, and my 55 has gutter guard and it makes a soft gurgling which is actually kindof relaxing.

Some reason for gurgling:
1) you can have your outlet below the water level in the sump but you need to be able to bleed the air. Put a 'T' at the outlet with one end exposed to the air. 2) If any of your overflow tubing bends upward on its way down to the sump this can lead to a gurgling/surging/flushing type effect. 3) Finally you want to be able to bleed air at the overflow intake in the display. |

Durso is definitely the way to go. I have an acrylic overflow with a 2 inch vinyl hose running under the waterline in the sump. It is completely quiet, save for the trickle of the protein skimmer. Occasionally there will be a gurgle from air escaping under the water in the sump, but that usually only happens after a water change. I'm very satisfied with the durso system and it is easy to make.

I made my own standpipe (kinda like the durso). It is great and not really any noise at all. I'll post pics and what I made it out of when I arrive home after school.

They take up barely any space (just vertical), unlike some of the other options, and work the best in my opinion. It was a bit tricky to get the setting right so that it doesn't gurgle, but once you understand *exactly* how it works, it was very easy to adjust. Mine's been completely silent for months now (85g system). By the way, I think the name is "Hofler" rather than "Hoffer". Not sure if there are 2 f's or not in the spelling. Do a search.

So the difference between a HGB and a stockman is the air hose?
I have what I would call a stockman w/ air hose, works great, but needs adjustment about once a week, and I needed two air hoses, running a mag 9.5 on a 90g |

look for the hoffer or hoffman gurgle buster. that combined with a filter sock on the drain in the sump worked great when i was using it on my 55. make sure the drain pipe is only 1/2" into the sump water though,.

i don't have gurgling but i do have a constant water trickling sound from the water going through the over flows. the water level in the cornerflow area of my tank is a couple inches lower than in the tank so the water cascades down the overflow panel on the back side. not sure if there is anything i can do to stop that though. adding more water just makes the level in the sump go up.
