have been posted in Beijing for a while. After a short hiatus, here we go:

Glass work in China is really cool, and I like the cutting

And this will be a Zeo tank:

But I made a small modification and there is a refugium, haha.

The 14 day initial cycle:

Day 1

a little bit more of the glass work. I really like it.

Day 3-4

apparently due to the geographical reason, fresh high quality live rocks are very available in China. There are lots of critters. Some are good some bad. All at your own risk, haha. But it's good to start in a classic way rather than with dry rocks.

Apparently due to the geographical reason, live rocks in China are very very fresh teeming with critters. Some good some bad all risk at your own, haha.

Day 4 and Day 5

a mantis shrimp and it appeared to be a peacock one. have already set up a trap and see if I'll have luck

a red sea slug. please help to identify if it's good. now it's been quarantined in the refugium

a black blenny coming with the live rocks. those rocks in the chinese market is really of high quality. it's very shy tho.

and some snails. the mantis is happy, i guess, even without feeding

I made the volume approximately of 100 gallon so I don't have to calculate the volume of the stones. basically one bag for 100 gallon

Update as of Day 8

I tested the water parameter on Sunday morning:

PO4 0.00, KH 5.8, Ca 449

I found TM salt usually is low on the reading of KH. Even worse I usually have problem with KH maintenance. Ordered a bottle of TM KH buffer

the official guide says from the fourth day on the tank will undergo a series of phases of algae blooming: brown-red-green. The brown phase is fadin whereas the green algae is emergin to replace. i didn't see red ones but there's cyano strivin on the chaeto in my refugium

i modified a lil bit by attachin a refugium to the system and insofar ive seen no ill effects

have already ordered a box of sps from a very reputable lfs. the store keeper's really nice

Day 11

per the guide, it is time for algae eaters and carbon

so here we go. I cleaned up two sides of glass so it's easy to see durin the whole progress, there has yet to come a major outbreak of algae

a closer look

the rocks teem with cryptic critters:

it's interestin the saron shrimp is a popular keeper in chinese tanks. the snails look quite different than those available in the US market. however, snails are pretty out of trade here coz people prefer saron shrimps and tuxedo urchins. and literally translated, this species of saron shrimp is called pseudo/fake-saron shrimp in mandarin

Update:

a blue mag quarantined. not in good shape but fortunately in the progress of recovery.

full tank shot before sps's were glued to the rocks

blue stags indigenous to South China sea. one is doing pretty well with full polyp extension the other quite struggling

red planet

a cool unknown acropora

green mille, a victim of bad white balance. it looked way greener in person

green and red mille, another victim of white balance. its base looked very green but its branches and tips need more red
