RO/DI Question

Just replaced my DI cartridge and am seeing TDS OF 002ppm. I’ve run several gallons through the new DI cartridge and can’t get the TDS to zero.

The TDS from my RO unit is 001.

Should I waste more water rinsing the DI cartridge or return it?

Try cleaning your sensor first. The one that shows .02ppm

Surely a TDS of 2 is acceptable. I just change carbon filters, pre filters, membrane and RO resin and getting a TDS of 2.

I just spoke with a rep at Marine Depot and was advised that the DI material may have dried out and that all is need is 24 hours for it to rehydrate.

I’ll have to wait and see if that is the case. This morning I started the process and watch fas the TDS coming from the DI filter rose from 006 ppm to 036 ppm that after 5 minutes slowly began to fall back to 006 ppm.

Which RO unit do you have? Did you get a cartridge with DI already in it or did you just buy DI resin and do it yourself?

Getting 1ppm after RO is pretty impossible. Something maybe wrong w/ DTS meter.

Why wouldn't you worry? The reason for getting to 0 is so we know that htere is nothing that is dangerous to the tank occupants.

For all you know that 5 could be copper, probably not, but some of it could very well be dangerous.

When did you last calibrate your TDS meter? I wouldn’t trust most hobbyist level TDS meters to accurately be able to tell the difference between 0 and 1ppm.

Did you buy a pre-filled cartridge or refill a cartridge you already had? Sometimes you can get channelling in the DI resin if not properly compacted and filled.

There would be a mixture of ions/elements getting through. I would say the risk is extremely minimal at 5ppm. Unless you were actually never doing water changes and just topping off for years on end with 5ppm water. Tanks much more likely to die from a myriad of other problems that plague reef tanks.
