Cleaning it out during water changes is a good idea..

Some have enough flow that it doesn't settle down there..
Others just hit it with a turkey baster to stir it up and have it flow around the tank (its great food for corals/filter feeders,etc...)
A powerhead down there is another option to keep it moving around..

I’ve found the shop vac that goes on a five gallon bucket works great for sump. Fairly cheap And when not in use it doesn’t take up much space. Only use it for wet use. Great and handy for small water spills too.

I use a diatom filter without the powder. If really dirty it will require a cleaning before I am finished.

I was dumb and though out my diatom and some other filter that would recirculate the water

Two ways for me, I have a small shop vac, I think it’s 2.5 gallons, I used strictly for water changes. I also just bought a lot vacuum attachment for a mj1200. Nozzle on input and hose to bucket.

I use a hydor koralia nano pump. Tiny, silent and cheap. It only draws 3.5 watts. I use the 240 gph version.
