thought that was part of the idea of a sump, to hid stuff like heaters.
Got mine in the sump and with 1000gph return the warm water makes it's way around. |

I have one in the overflow box and the other in the sump. I was worried about the one in my acrylic sump getting too hot so I zip tied it to a couple of rocks in the sump so that it wasn't touching any acrylic.

Mine is in my overflow box. Sump was not big enough for a 400w.

When is heater technology gonna follow the trend of every other product and go smaller with more efficiency? By now we should have 20w heaters the size of a dime that could heat a 200g tank and be hidden behind a small piece of rubble rock?
I'm such a dreamer!!! |

For even temperature distribution in the tank, I leave mine in the sump. Looks alot cleaner as well.

I'm surprised so many people keep their heaters exclusively in the sump...
I agree that the heaters are not sexy, but if you go with two smaller heaters instead of one large you can hide them pretty well. Not to mention, if your return pump quits and you're not around to do anything about it, you're hosed. I run a single large heater right now, but just bought two smaller heaters which equal th same wattage. I run the large one in the DT and will run the two smaller ones in the DT, on either side of the overflow in the DT. My tank can drop 2-3 degrees even during water changes if the heater is off, so it makes the most sense for me to have the heaters and the controller probe in the DT to ensure I keep the temp as stable as possible. One thing I haven't decided on yet, is how to run the heaters... I can either use a Y splitter and run them off the same Apex outlet, or I can have them on their own Apex outlets and program one to run at a specific temp and if the heater can't keep up, the second one then comes on at a slightly lower temp as a backup. Thoughts?

If return pump -failure is a concern, just run two of them The only equipment that goes into the display tank are non-intrusive circulation pumps. Everything else is placed in the sump (including 2x heaters) |

Heater in the sump and the temp probe in the overflow. Getting ready to do a radiant heat system using my gas water heater

I wonder if the OP has decided yet .... only been 9 years
I hate equipment and wires in the display, so it’s sump for me. It’s one if the main benefits of a sump. I suppose if I ran a dodgy quality DC pump I might feel differently, but my PanWorld is decade reliable, so I really don’t worry about it failing. Plus, if it does, I keep a drop in replacement on hand.

Finnex Titanium more than likely.
I prefer to have more lower wattage heaters. At least 2 but preferably 3. oy
