400W lamps in a Giessman Spectra

I love hearing all the ideas and thoughts about what should and shouldn’t happen but I’d really like to hear from people who actually have run 400W lamps in a Giessman Spectra for an appreciable amount of time.

I’m getting ready to switch from 250W to 400W SE Radium B lamps in my Giessman Spectra. I finished my PV system a month ago so electrical cost isn’t really an issue. At issue is the fact that my old Air conditioner would have trouble keeping up with 1200 watts of any kind of lighting in the summer. Now that fall is upon us, that’s not an issue and I want to put in the 400W lamps.

I did install 1 400 watt lamp a few days ago in the center position and it does seem to make that section of the fixture noticeably warmer.

The question for people who have ran 400W lamps in a Giessman Spectra:

Was the extra heat a problem for the fixture?

I would really consider the Giesemann 20K bulb over the Radium it's a more balance 20K bulb

I've run a 400w Radium for the past 2-3 years in my 24" Giesemann Spectra and have had no issues at all.

My tank is only 16” deep so it’s definitely overkill. In fact, it’s probably too much for my 36x36x16 tank. But I prefer overkill

Well, I already have the Radiums. I’ll have to look, perhaps I have a set of Giesemann 20K’s too.
