Interesting...
Looks like very few things changed...? A new heat-sink on each side is one. |

1) The fixture looks similar in design/looks but the internals have changed. 2) A G3 to G4 upgrade is not possible due to these changes 3) New heatsink, optics, and LEDs 4) New optics that are claimed to improve light spread considerably 5) Two additional channels/LEDs/colors are warm white and violet Last edited by ThurlowR; 08/06/2016 at 05:20 AM. |

That really sucks if they won't allow an upgrade since that has been a selling point.

Likely that it's not a matter of allowing an upgrade, but rather more likely the fact that it's not possible to upgrade the internals without losing money on the deal.
First and foremost, Eco-Tech Marine is a business. If it cant make money, it wont remain in business. They make a good product and have excellent customer service. I recently upgraded my Gen1's to Gen 3's. I'm happy with the upgrades and feel that the cost to upgrade was fair for what I got. It's likely that upgrading Gen 3's to Gen 4's (if possible) would essentially entail stripping everything out of the Gen 3 and replacing it all with the Gen 4 internals. If that is in fact the case, buying an upgrade that is very close to the price of buying a whole new fixture doesnt make sense financially to anyone. I'll use my Gen 3's til they fall apart, and then I'll upgrade to whatever is available at the time. Hopefully, that will be an Eco-Tech product at that point, but if there is a better product at a better price, I'll look at it. Eco-Tech's Customer service has been exemplary every time I've needed them which goes a LONG way towards future purchases from them, but like anything...they need to be continually improving and evolving their product line. Which leads us full circle back to the Gen 4 Radion....

The current Gen 3 Pros are an amazing light and alot of people are having great success with them, I think all of us either have those or the older versions, so its easy to upgrade to the gen 3 pro and you will still have years of good use. We will have to wait and see what the Gen 4 "officially" looks like. If its a significant enough upgrade to justify replacing with it then it might make sense. Also if they cant swap the internals from the older version to the newer ones. The Gen 4 might be essentially the Gen 1 of the next run of lights, so having the Gen 4 would put you in line with the next batch of upgrades. I think Ecotech has done what they initially set out to do and built a light that was upgradable, I still have my original Gen 1 and no issues, and its build date is October 2011. Almost 5 years of continued support and upgrades is almost unheard of these days. Heck even Google doesnt offer to swap the guts of my Nexus phone at a discount. |

Over on RBuilders they have some photos of the new lense design as well as news that the light will have 23 LEDs per puck.

I was hoping they would bring the price down.
Like all electronics when the tech ages and gets better. Most on here have 6' long tanks (125+ gallons). That is $2250+ in just lighting. |
