Orange encrusting sponge reproduction

I have some orange encrusting sponge in my tank that has done really well. Lately I have seen pieces begin to pull away and tissue stretch out like rubber bands dropping large chunks. I am wondering if the sponge is spreading through budding or if something else is going on like trying to get to lower light? The stretchy tissue reminds me of what mushrooms look like when they "drip" and spread. I've seen it drop two pieces now. I've looked online trying to find reference information and haven't found anything that describes this.

No one has any idea what's going on?
