As far as if it has to be the Fleischmann's RapidRise Yeast - no one really knows - that is the only one tired so far I think - and we know that one works. If you try a different one - let us know the results. |

Didn't help for me either. Some spots actually got worse during treatment.

I read about this many times over the years and never believed it either. I also believed salts in the seawater would quickly kill the yeast. Yeast would also become a good food source for many other nuisances as it contains a good amount of phosphates. Thats about all I saw yeast good for. However, I was fairly surprised when I decided to put it under the microscope. It certainly reacts in someway with diatoms and specifically diatoms. I don't know what this means but here's what I saw and posted in another thread Quote:

I haven't put it under a microscope, but I'm almost sure if it. I have been thoroughly cleaning the sand every week and it has been helping. At first info moved the sand it would cloud the tank and now I can blow most of the sand with a turkey baster and get minimal clouding.

Any new updates? What brand of bakers yeast did you use and what amount for what size tank?

I didn't update yesterday because I did a 20g water change, sucking out most of the dinos. I will do another dose tonight and continue for a few more days. I have not noticed a change within the first 2 days. I'm using Fleischmanns rapid rise instant yeast. Right from the grocery stire. It's hard to guess a measurement, so for my 120g tank, I'm using the size of a nickel in my palm when I add it to the tank.

Why add the yeast and then do a water change? I would assume that you would want the full dosage of yeast to remain in the water to do its magic.

For those that have tried this, did you turn off your skimmer and/or UV?

I do not have a UV, and I left my skimmer running. There was extra skimmate but nothing crazy. I'm going to test again after my vacation.
