Poly-fil

Has anyone used poyl-fil as part of their filtration system? I was thinking of using it in my overflow before the water goes down to my filter sock. Thinking it would help clean the water more and save on my socks getting nasty so fast.

Do you mean Poly Filter?

If so I use it, but as a safeguard, not part of my main filtration, as it is too expensive for that. I run this in my sump return section mainly as a tell-tale. When I first set my tank up (it is 15 months old now) it fouled fairly quickly (~2 months) but I am now getting longer life as my nutrient export and filtration is under control. The current piece is 4 months old and looks like it will last another few.

If it starts turning dark brown quickly then all it is doing is filtering nutrients and there are far cheaper ways to do that.

If it turns light brown and gradually gets darker then that’s normal and you should just pay attention for other colours. Dark brown again means your nutrient control is not working well enough, other colours mean contaminants of some sort. The instructions explain which colour means what contaminant.

It would be the large bags of poly fil from walmart that you can buy. I believe its used to stuff pillows, blankets etc.

If your system is set up in a way that you need to use it it is perfectly fine. Although my tanks are set up with no mechanical filtration, I do occasionally need to do a big cleaning and I find that a canister filter stuffed with poly-fil is the perfect tool for the job. It is also about 1000% cheaper than the very same stuff from your LFS. I bought a huge bag of it about 20 years ago and still have at least 1/3 of it left.

Id remove the socks and only use them during maintenance if that...
You might find your tank is healthier without them.

I use it on my tank. a lot easier than cleaning filter socks. just take out the cup, throw the poly fil out and refill
