Seems like the aggression is gone.
They are all swimming together and all fins and scratches are healed. Here is a little video of them going through some flakes/pellets after eating nori all day...

Added the Chevron Tang and Black Ice Clownfish last night...
Everyone seems to be getting along. The Purple gets chased by the Black every now and then. I think it's because the Purple always has his fins extended, unlike the Yellow who keeps them in.

Thanks
Thank you for the information on the Kessil lights. I have an 8 foot long tank I am putting together and have been looking for real life coverage information. Just doing research I thought I would need four of them, but looking at your set up, I realize I only need 3.
Thank you again, your tank is great. Ash |

Will probably get a 4th when I start adding coral. Need to get the automatic water change setup first, but will only tackle that after we get back our two trips in the next month. Should be staying in town after that... just don't want anything to go wrong while we're gone. Also, just ordered an LED grow light to test on the fuge. So far I'm not having much luck with my Chaeto. Might be the lack of nutrients as well. It's turning white on the tips, so I'm guessing light though...

It's amazing how dirty the water needs to be to start growing this stuff. Unless you want to dose iron supplement. Be thankful it's dying off at this early stage.

Sorry for the lack of updates guys
Been busy with vacations and starting a new business... Had a few ich spots pop up on my Yellow Bellied Blue Tang. Went away after a week and I haven't seen them in the last few weeks. Also added a very active Cleaner Wrasse. Seems to be doing great and eats like a pig. I believe that the tank the Yellow Tang, YB Blue Tang and Black Ice Clown were in had ich from years ago. The low stress environment of that tank just masked it. Since I don't have any coral in the tank yet, I'm going to do hypo on the display for 6 weeks as a cheap insurance policy. I'm also starting to think I'll need 2 or 3 more Kessils on the tank. 3 just isn't enough. Looking at my frag tank, the big tank is really missing out on lighting. Just seem dull to me. That's with the Kessils at 100% strength. After the hypo is done, I'm going to add invert back in, after they go into the frag tank for 12 weeks of quarantine. Also going to start adding coral as well. Now going to do 12 weeks of QT on all coral and inverts, in a fishless system. Will change my QT procedure for fish to: - Tank Transfer (12 days either 2 or 3 day stays in each tank) - 4-6 Week observation with 3 prazi treatments BTW: I seem to be seeing a lot of thick algae on the overflow teeth and on two powerhead cables. Is this just normal for a tank that's been up for 5 months or so? Should go away by itself?

What are your water measurements? Do they indicate a tend towards too many nutrients over time?

No phosphates. Is this kind of hair algae normal in a new tank at the 5 month mark or so? It's been too long since I set up a new tank to remember.

If there are no organic inputs to the tank (i.e. algae nutrients) you should see this disappear. If you are feeding/dosing anything to the tank and it is empty (if I understood your previous posts everything is in quarantine) then stop feeding/dosing. See what the algae does. If it disappears in a few weeks, great. If it continues to grow you've got something decomposing somewhere that is releasing nutrients and feeding the algae. Try vacuuming the substrate.

I guess the sheer number of water that will need to be replaced will get a lot of organics out of the tank. I have been a bit lazy about cleaning the skimmer neck, so I really need to step that up to put my skimmer to better work.

Hey if you can't harvest Cheto from the sump, harvest hair algae from the power cords....
BTW if you don't have any corals in the tank, then just turn the lights off. Three days of darkness will kill off algae, never mind 6 weeks...... Put another Kessil on the refugium. Grow your algae in the place you want to. Then just use enough on the main to make it look nice... This is where having Radion's would be nice. You could let them run through all the colors as the day goes on. Daniel. |

I didn't think about that... will definitely do that. Have a fancy grow light and two other not so strong blue/white fixtures on the fuge. It's not really growing Chaeto like crazy, but is full of algae now. The 6 weeks is for the ich that popped up for a week or so... (

Played around with a 4th Kessil A360W-E today.
One of mine was making a clicking noise, so they sent a new one. While I have a 4th laying around, I had my wife put it at different places in the tank... Just have to say WOW... I need 2 or 3 more of these right away. 3 A360W-E fixtures on a 10 foot tank will light it up... but not really light it up... Will get two more to start off with and also lower them all by about 2-4 inches. Really makes a huge difference... my little frag tank looks so much better

Remember that Kessil is soon to be releasing a new model. I guess they were not happy with the 360 model. It does mean you can get them cheaper of course.

A pendant called the 380, but for now it is only a grow light with white and red leds. Also a unit similar to a radion but a bit longer. Still has the dense matrix cluster, but it is about two feet long. Only a prototype as of the video release, but looks very promising.
Both are on YouTube. One from bulk reef supply. One direct from Kessil. I would guess, a formal unveiling at MACNA. For Sale shortly after. Daniel. |

Hmm I wonder if the 380 will work with the 360s when all connected to each other?

Have you seen the two clips yet?

I spoke to Kessil and the did confirm that any new lights being released are planned to be able to daisy chain off of existing A360 lights. So that's good news, and hopefully that means an A380 might be announced here shortly

Hey guys...
Not too much going on here... Finally got around to doing a few things on my list this weekend. First was to start treating the tank with PraziPro since I dumped in a Cleaner Wrasse from Divers Den right into the tank. Never had luck with Cleaners in QT and already had seen 4-5 spots on my Yellow Bellied Blue Tang, so wasn't worried about ich. Spots have been gone for over a month and Cleaner is doing great. Doing hypo anyway as an insurance policy... thought I'd also treat the whole tank with PraziPro since I'll be doing tons of water changes her starting Tuesday to reach hypo levels to treat the spots I saw on the YB Blue Tang. Then stop for 3 days after the second dose of Prazi, then finish off lowering the salinity and keeping it there for 6 weeks. I also spotted a lone Aiptasia... where the hell that came from who knows... all rock was acid bathed dry rock that was cured by itself... no frags or coral added either. Just fish and inverts... Hoping running the tank at 1.008 or 1.009 for 6 weeks will kill the aiptasia as well. My wife really wanted a CBB next anyway... so if the aiptasia lives... maybe the Butterfly will eat it... Finally also after month of my wife telling me to do it, I raised all the wires off of the ground. Just used some Hercules hooks and pipe J hangers to mount a 10 foot piece of 3/4" PVC. I then just zip tied all the cables, controllers, power supplies along it... Not the prettiest thing ever, but works... it's all behind the stand anyway... Also mounted the Apex on a board and off the ground. Once again not pretty, but it's hidden in a little cove next to the tank, so you can't see it unless you're looking for it... Hopefully everything will go well during the hypo, then I can start QTing new fish, coral and inverts!!! BTW: Little frag tank is having some issues with dinos... think because I broke down an old tank and a bunch of crap got into the water column... it's only showing up on the PVC though... trying to dose H202, but doesn't seem to help. Hopefully it'll go away in a few weeks by itself with low/no feeding and water changes...

How do you know what dinos look like?
I had been dealing with some kind of crap in my tank for months. It looked like mud on top of my sand and rock. Finally went away after I took out all the corals and kept the lights off for the last week. I first thought it was cyano but chemiclean had no effect on it. http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/sh...6#post22998276 This thread had my q&a with a few people. How do you get rid of it for good? Daniel. |
