Afraid to work in tank

I have a VERY aggressive female maroon clown that's bitten off little pieces of my hand before. I don't now what to do since everytime I try to rearrange something in my tank I end up splashing water everywhere trying to evade her. Using a net with my other hand used to keep her at bay, but now she's not even afraid of that. Sometimes I flick her but that just makes her more mad and she comes back with a vengeance. Would maybe adding a more aggressive fish keep her at bay?

Get some arm length thick rubber gloves for starters.

i'd get on the phone and see if your lfs would be willing to take that fish on consignment. my ocellaris clowns use to nip me when they were 1.5" but have since relaxed... there's no way i'd stand for that from a 5" maroon.

She's quite an attractive fish but I can't count how many times I've knocked over a rock trying to aquascape/evade her

Can you put in a temporary divider while you work on the tank? Or catch it and put it in an acclimation box while working on the tank?

I have an aggressive pair that do the same anytime I need to do anything in the tank. Both of them will bite, and if they get the chance the female will draw blood. I usually flick at her and this usually keeps her at bay albeit for a short time only. If I am doing something that requires more time I will set something near her annamoe, and this keeps her distracted for a while. Maroon's are notorious for this type of behavior, they will fight to the death to protect their territory.

Adding another fish will not change her behavior towards you.

Gloves. Problem solved. You should probably wear them anyway but you can buy disposable vet shoulder length or buy heavy duty dish washing. Just air out and clean if you use rubber / latex vs disposable.

I had an oscellaris pair that used to nip me and make me bleed. The female was maybe 2" tops. I can't imagine dealing with a 5" maroon.

I once had a Picasso trigger jump out of a tank and when I picked him up to put him back in he took a chunk of flesh out of my finger. The thing was a meat grinder. In the day I would feed my lion fish live gold fish. The trigger got to one first and it was a blood bath. He shredded and consumed all of the fish in less than 30 seconds. All that was left was some cloudy water.

Sounds so much like my wife! I have mine in a 18 gallon right now. She is only 2”. I am hoping that she calms down when i upgrade to a 170 gallon in a couple of years

Dive gloves like these will work well. I always play around w/ damselfish on the reef that will dart out and attack your fingers. Or grabbing spiny lobsters--a must.
You dont need gloves sold for "aquarium use".

Know exactly what you mean!

Used to have an Ocellaris pair in my 40 gal. Every time I moved around my live rock or had my hands in the tank too long I’d get nipped at by the female. Once she drew blood on my thumb. None of my friends outside the hobby would believe a small fish can make you bleed!

They are all correct. Thick Neoprene gloves will make it all go away. I had a breeding pair of Clarkiis that were murderers! I used dishwashing gloves, but it still makes you jump when they attack. I got rid of the little buggars.

I use regular nitril gloves but she figured it out and now attacks the softer inside of my forearm.
