Green Hair Algae on Birdsnest Tips

I have had this coral for several months. I didn't notice the damage to the tip when I put it in the tank. A couple of weeks later I noticed the hair algae growing on the (presumed) dead tips. Can I just take some finger nail clippers and remove the tips? Will that just cause another dead spot and allow the algae to return? I don't have hair algae anywhere else in my tank, and this stuff doesn't really grow, it just doesn't go away. I pulled as much as I could off of it with my fingers a couple of weeks ago and it has stayed just the same since.

I will give it a shot and see what happens. I know that the tip is dead, but I didn't want to cause any additional harm. I just want the algae off of it and out of my tank...
Thanks for the encouragement and your replies.
