LMFAO This is priceless!

galleon man I love your style.

Refreshing to see someone that actually has a grasp on reality as to what kind of light these animals actually do grow under everyday in the wild. All this "you are gonna overlight your tank and stress your corals" is some of the most ridiculous fish poop out there IMHO.
About the only problem that I can see that you are gonna have with this setup is that your corals are gonna explode with growth.

Are you planning to move your light closer after everything is acclimated?
Or will it heat your water too much?

The single float switch for the ATO kinda scares me though. They do work really well, but mine sticks every once in awhile. (I have a secondary as a failsafe) Sealife starts growing on it, and that is in my dark sump. I would be really careful with yours, especially cause it looks like it's getting some light too. Just make sure to keep it clean. Maybe you have some kind of failsafe too and I just missed it.

Looking forward to you showing all these doubters how it's done.

Thanks man! I won't move my light closer unless I feel the need to. Right now the temperature stays very stable with that much air between the lamp and water. I will watch the corals to get my answer.

As for the ATO, I don't like having only one either, and I will get a second on reverse eventually. Right now I am OCD about cleaning it every week when I do my water changes. I also find running the standing wave knocks it and keeps it loose and from sticking so far.

Thanks for the support!

Love the method you are using all the best in proving the haters wrong.

It's a 70 gallon reef ready converted into an indoor greenhouse.

The overflow holes have fans to pump in fresh air at certain intervals. Temperature is controlled by flex watt heat tape, watering is by a MistKing and distilled water, lighting is a Nova Extreme Pro 6 x 39 watt fixture. The whole thing is controlled by a DA HerpKeeper.

The inhabitants are a CBB female green tree python and all the plants are orchid from Papua New Guinea.

This hobby got to where it is by people thinking outside the box and experimental ideas. if it wasn't for people with your attitude we wouldn't be seeing any sps in home reefs. Good luck.

+1... it's one thing to question things (like some people did), but it's completely different when people automatically discard a person's idea because it's not the "normal" way of doing things.

Glad the build is going well so far... keep it up.

Guys, while I appreciate the comments, I promise this is not a new, unique, out of the box way of growing corals. See Righty's post about his tank at work.

Hi Chris. Long time since I have followed one of your threads. Interesting tank you have set up. I always did like the Iwasaki bulbs, and have used the 400,s but had a preference for the 250w version. The 400,s seemed more yellow to me. I once ran a 400w in a large reflector, as the only light over my 180g cube style tank.

Look forward to following the growth progress. I see someone asked about fish. Any going in there?

Agree'd it's nothing new, just something you don't see many people doing since it's not very efficient. 400w Halide 2'-4' above your tank, or 250w halide 8"-10". Although I readily admit I loved my 2 400w w/luminarcs when I had them over my 5x3x2 tank. Currently I'm running a 20x20x10 tank right now, with a 250w colours are amazing. Don't see the need for the extra $$ on my electric bill.

Well, the halide is 16" above the tank. And it's not "inefficient" if you're trying to do what's right by extremely shallow growing Acropora.

Well, surely that also depends on the photoperiod, not just bulb wattage.
