My Shallow Reef

Took some chalice picks this morning. Mostly under royal blue led, t5's were just starting to ramp up.

Shot with iPhone and a sheet of orange gel filter to take some of the blue out.

Nice Tank

I was about to ask about the bright orange Monti as well. That is really a nice piece. Is that any old Montipora Setosa or from a specific morph? How old is that colony?

I bought it from a local reefer that was breaking down his tank. It was a mini colony about 6 months ago. So not sure of the lineage. It seems to be happy in the upper part of the tank, and it shoots up branches.

I noticed some of my SPS were getting darker, so I checked NO3 and it has gotten up to 7.
It was pretty stable at 2-3 for quite awhile so I stopped checking. I do think the xenia helped with nutrient control. Dosing with fluke tab wiped out the xenia and this may be why Nitrate is creeping up. Started dosing NoPOx 5ml a day, and dosed some bacteria in a bottle as well. Microbacter 7, and Special Blend bacteria per instructions on the bottle.
Will also change out filter socks more frequently, maybe every two days instead of every four days.

It's been about six weeks since I dosed fluke tabs and said goodbye to Xenia and GSP. A couple of weeks later my nitrate got up to 10, and I think the Xenia was helping to keep my nutrients low. I've been carbon dosing with NOPox for about three weeks now and Nitrate is down to 5. During that time my Alk was going swinging more than normal and a couple SPS frags are not happy. Another thing I used to do, but haven't done recently is vacuum the gravel bed during a water change. I would normally just do a section of sand with each change, but I have so many frags on the sandbed it's harder to vacuum.

So I took a sample of water to my lfs to so they could test, and I could compare to my testing. Mostly I was interested in Phosphate. I have the Elos Phosphate test kit, and I can interpret the color when its very low PO4 reading, but this was more blue than normal. House of Fins tested it at 0.03. Not crazy high, but I'm used to be between .o1 and .02.
I knew it was high because I've started growing algae in the tank, and that typically has not been a problem for me.

Chris at lfs talked me into trying this small Innovative Marine reactor that has a little pump on the bottom. The pump has a slide control so you can adjust the flow. I put in half the recommended dose, like one inch of Rowa GFO media and set the flow to a slow boil / simmer. The next day I tested PO4 and got 0.01, so I unplugged the pump to turn it off. I wonder if I could have just put some gfo in a mesh bag? Also, I've read that high nutrient tanks can tolerate high light and I had my fixture pretty low like 7 inches off the water. Now that my nutrients are lower I raised my fixture about four inches so I don't burn anything. We'll see if this nutrient thing levels out.
