My guess is an encrusting sponge. Is it hard or firm but a bit squishy ?

Sometimes my Coraline will die off like that, I have a few spots like that due to calcium levels changing and or flow rates changing in certain areas.

That’s just a guess though, hard to tell from just a picture... but if it was purple I know it’s white, that would be my guess.

If it was purple, maybe a dead purple sponge?
Sponge is a good, most consume silicates in the water column to build their structures.

Do you have urchins? My 2 hitch hiker urchins have started munching the purple off my rocks.
