I was able to get things straightened out in my grow out tank. I thought I was going to have some extra space on the rack, but it's already pretty full...
at least now it looks somewhat more organized. The platform is 3'x3' in a 4'x4' tank.

red planet did not like its new location.
This past weekend, I had to do some unwanted moving of coral in my display tank. I really hate moving things around in the tank. I never put my hands in there...unless I really have to. I had to move a large tricolor poccilopora that was shadowing a blue tort I moved a JF birdsnest to the floor of the tank that was in the shadows and not doing well, and also ended up smashing a favorite green torch into four pieces I am running out of space & I think I'm going be finding new homes for the coral you see that are not on the reef structure in this video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_nwsXkvZbO0

Here is a little update.
I went to the Manhattan Reefs frag swap in December, and bought 4 cool frags. wd tenius, orange millie, and two bubble gum digitas from a MR member All are doing well. I also am trying this year to grow out some more difficult coral This week I picked up a frag pack.... let's see how they do I lined them up in my tank in the order that they were shown on the frag pack picture.

Jim, Just read your entire build thread and it's quite an impressive progression and end result. You definitely know what you're doing and have had great success. The videos show your progression well.
Have you had any significant setbacks or problems with your new at home system? Pests? Ich, etc? What was the cause of your crash in your at work system years ago? What did you do to make sure that didn't happen again? What's your water change schedule? Is it manual or automated?

Reefkeeper64,
Current system seems to be going well. I have not really had too many acquisitions put into the tank, but I make sure to dip everything that I do put in the system. I also keep a close eye on my alk.. This system is being run with a reefkeeper RKE, so I have some control with regard to setting alarms if something goes out of parameter range. I do have redundancy for the system.. multiple heaters and chillers on different electrical circuits, as well as a complete back up RKE , modules and controllers. and extra critical pumps.. spare ballasts MH and VHO bulbs. As for my old system, (no controller) The failure occurred while I was out of town. I had (2) chillers running on parallel plumbing circuits. One was taken of line for fan motor replacement, and the part was not delivered before I went on vacation. The second chiller failed when I was out of town and the tank cooked.. still gives me a sick feeling to even think about it..

Thanks for sharing those details. I feel for you and sorry to hear that happened to you. This makes me think I need to review my own plans for my next build because I don't have the kind of redundancy you have in the plans currently and I need to fix that.
Haha, I told the wifey about your story and she asked asked me what 'redundancy' on a reef tank actually means. I explained but didn't mention that I'm going to spend a little more money to provide for that. It will be worth it just for piece of mind. Thanks

I went to the Frag Farmers Market again this year.. I set up a small tank with some frags that I grew.. I had a great time, and had a chance to talk with many people, including a bunch of folks from RC...

I felt that I sold a pretty good bunch of frags at the Frag Farmers Market..
I took this video this week, and it looks like I did not take anything out of this for the show.. https://youtu.be/mII7Ay19fcQ

it's been a year since my last update..
I had depressing summer/fall I did my regular scheduled VHO and MH bulb change (same bulb types) on my display and frag systems, and for some reason the coral in the frag system did not like the change. My display tank, however, had no issues (both are plumbed on the same system). Over the coarse of 3-4 months most of the fussy coral only in the frag system gradually went pale, and died. Not sure what was happening, I did have a alk dip just before the bulb change, but could not point to that as the culprit. The only thing here is that the frag tank is shallow and the coral are pretty close to the water line. Maybe the alk dip in combo with fresh bulbs triggered stress in the coral. Seeing this happen, and I could not get to the bottom of the issue really frustrated me so much to the point that I was about to throw in the towel and shut down the frag tank. I had lost about 1/2 the system Late fall, I condensed the coral to the front 1/2 of the tank, and powered down the lighting on the back 1/2 and took a wait and see if I could get things stabilized. It's been about 4 months and the remaining coral have been showing good signs of stability and growth. Looks like I am going the right direction... (for now - hopefully)

March 2019 update
Past summer, I had a issue with my 300DD display tank. One of the corner seams started to visually look white like the silicone was starting to fail. I thought it was just me looking into things too much. I kept a eye on it for a few months, but one day, the area I was keeping an eye on started to put out a bead of sweat every few seconds. HOLY CRAP !!!. I took down the tank

fistcatdog66,
Thanks... I'll get the ball rolling again, but probably not as elaborate.

That’s a bummer, out of curiosity how old is the tank? Can it not be repaired?

Aquaticchaos,
I bought it 2010-ish and for me 300 gallons is a boat load of water, I don't really trust a repair.

fall 2019 update
I've been pretty busy in other areas of my life, and have decided to shut down and sell off the hardware from my system.
Prop tank has been on auto pilot for over the last year... growing out a few frags that I got back from a friend who had some frags of my coral in their tank. I have a pal who is going to take the frags. I'm going to be putting put up a FOR SALE thread for the prop tank, sump, equipment & live rock It's time for me to take a break from the hobby it's been a good ride 2003-2019

Sorry to hear that Jim... if I didn’t have 1000g in various tanks, I’d get that system from you!
Still doing the car shows?

What are the sump dimensions? I think that it’s a little bigger than mine, but one of mine has a small leak, might be easier to just replace it...
