Do yellow tangs have trouble eating floating food?
Mine seems to have an issue. He doesn't go vertical enough so it causes his top fins to breach the top. He gets spooked and dives back down before he gets the food. My clowns have no problem getting food off the surface.
Also he/she seems to only like mysis shrimp. Flakes and pellets just gets spit back out. Won't touch the seaweed sheets I specifically bought for it too. Even the clowns will take a few nibbles. He will eat the small pieces of chaeto that makes it into the tank though. |

Eating food off the surface is a very unnatural behavior for saltwater reef fish, especially a grazer. It’s something they have to learn. In my opinion there is a danger of ingesting air so I avoid feeding off the surface by feeding sinking pellets and dropping them from high enough to break through surface tension when they fall.

I use sinking pellets also, and when I feed Nori use a clip. If you are interested in Nori feeding search these forums as there are some really good suggestions out there for different styles of feeding devices.
