Ok I have read most of the thread but I am not sure whats causing the problem. The shroud is the same as my other one. Should I try to cut slits closer to the prop or should I try a new maxi 1200.

Ok...Now this is weird. It will run in my testing tub but it wont run in the aquarium. Also it wont start under water but will run under water if I start it out of the water and then place it into the water.

Has anyone tried any of the Octura xx45 series of props?
The Dumas 3004 is 1.75", 1.5" pitch, The Octura 1245 is 1.77",2.124" pitch, so should move a good deal more water if a Mj1200 can spin it. As the first 2 numbers go up the pitch goes up (45 as the last 2 numbers means 45mm diameter I assume)

Octura 1440 is about max the MJ (MJ1200) can do and iffy at that.
The *45 props are way out of the MJ's league |

So if you swap shroud with the other mod of yours does it then work? if it runs but won't start under water is typically a sign that the prop is a bit too much for the pump |

The octura 2035 is working great on the other maxi 1200...I am getting another PH to test. I dont want to disturb the other for fear that it will also stop working. In fact I seem to remember that I shaved that prop down a bit.
Thanks Scott |

Ok, I added a set of partial slits towards the prop and now its running like a champ. For now that is.

Okay, didn't use a rubber bolt, instead I just stuck a piece of that black airline tubing that MJs use for their airline. Used that as a stopper, and it was MUCH quieter.
So just writing this to confirm, as least IME, that using a floppy piece of airline is pretty quiet when used as a stopper. Its still not dead silent, but even if the prop hits the stopper 2 - 3 times, it is just a faint, muffled tapping. HTH

OK, sorry if this question had already been asked, but I've read through most of this thread and haven't gotten my answer. I ordered two MJ1200's and the mod kit from MJMods.com. After completing both mods I tested them both out. They are both almost completely silent and putting out an unbelievable amount of flow... too much flow, actually. I'm using the large shrouds with the Dumas 3004 props. My fish won't come out of hiding!!! I even tried running just one, an it's still way too much with the 800-900gph coming from my sump return. I like the wide flow pattern and hate to stop using these on my 75g, so my question is... would there be any smaller props that I could use to maybe cut the flow in 1/2? If so, which ones and where do I get them.

Probably should've bought the MJ900, but that's hindsight. MJMods sells the Octura 1435, which I believe is the lowest flow prop they sell. There are lower flow ones out there though. I got the 1435 for MJ900's and I think it's borderline in my 90g. I'm thinking of getting some props for a little less flow myself.
At least yours is quiet. **edit** Forgot, I've read you can shave down your prop with a dremel to make it smaller and therefore less flow. I wonder how difficult it is to get it even on both sides though.

Unless your 75g is a full blown SPS tank, I would not have chosen the 3004 Dumas. That sucker can move some serious water. Here are some lower flow props listed from strongest to weakest Octura 1435 (1.38") Hobbico Nitro Hammer (1.25") http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXMNM5&P=0 3002 Dumas (1.25") http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXE471&P=0 If you choose to use the Nitro Hammer or the smaller 3002 Dumas you will need to drill out the hole a bit so that the rigid airline will fit. A 3/16" bit is what you will need. Of course you can also trim down your existing propeller to lessen the flow. Just try to make the blades as even as possible. |

Hi, I apologise if this question has already been asked, but what are the advantages of using the carbon fibre tube that (mjmods now sells) over the rigid airline, if indeed there are any.

What does everybody consider to be the best length for the shroud and prop shaft?
Mine is about 3 inches now, but want to go shorter. |

dc-909 i run my shrouds very short, well i really just use a 1 1.5 " gray pvc coupler. i have built some shorter shrouds, around 1.75 -2" and they work well too, the longer the shroud the more focused the flow pattern is.

bosborn- is your testing vesel saltwater or fresh. i have built many a mod for the maxis that will run in freshwater ut when placed in saltwater it wouldnt run. so now i do all my testing in saltwater.
oh yeah and for the guy who psoted the info about the washers, they rock, i bought a baggy full of them from mcmaster and they have quited down a few of the noisy mods that i have done. Tim |

Maybe this basic question has been answer, hope it's ok to ask again. How far of a space between the prolleller and the stopper? I've tried a few things, but it isn't running consistantly. It stopped or just hitting the stopper even 3/8'" apart for a 2.5" shroud. I used an Octura 1435 for the 900 and 1445 on the 1200.

Thanks Gatorfreak and dhnguyen, I think i'll just try one of those lower flow props that you guys suggested. For only a couple bucks, I'd rather do that than try to mess with trimming the ones i've got now... sounds like a pain to me. I had no idea the amount of flow these mods really do put out until i saw it for myself. Had I believed everyone here about the flow these things put out, i wouldn't have got the MJ1200, but maybe the MJ600 or so.
