It seems like bannerfish are not as easy as they make it seem to be.
Perhaps one of the tangs, or angels rammed it causing internal injury?

1. How many angels/butterflies do you have in the tank? By the last list I saw, I count 20?

Here's my updated list:

Acanthurus leucosternon
Acanthurus fowleri
Labroides dimidiatus
Choerodon fasciatus (Aussie)
Halichoeres hortulanus
Chaetodontoplus melanosoma
Chaetodontoplus meredithi
Chaetodontoplus septentrionalis
Genicanthus lamarck
Pomacanthus navarchus (in the fuge for now, will be moved to "reef" tank since the Mac hates him)
Pomacanthus maculosus
Holacanthus tricolor
Centropyge loricula
Chaetodon burgessi
Chaetodon collare
Chaetodon tinkeri
Chaetodon ephippium
Chaetodon falcula
Chaetodon fasciatus
Chaetodon flavirostris
Chaetodon mertensii
Chaetodon rainfordi
Chaetodon xanthurus
Heniochus singularius (found dead one morning... not a scratch on him, and always ate. No clue what happened.)
Microcanthus strigatus
Amphiprion melanopus x 2
Chrysiptera hemicyanea
Chrysiptera talboti x 2
Pseudochromis sankeyi

2. How did you determine which order to add them, or was there not much of a plan once you had a large number in there already.

It is very difficult to plan a lot of fish perfectly, since you are at the mercy of what is available, and looks good. Acclimation boxes are a great thing

3. Sounds like you have a large skimmer, any other major filtration methods?

Just live rock, and carbon occasionally.

4. How much live rock is in the system?

I honestly don't remember. Everything you see in the tank is LR though.

5. What do you use for clean up crew? Bristle worms and pods.

6. Are there any inverts that you would not suggest (thinking shrimps specifically)? My understanding is that angels primary diet is made up of a lot of algae (you are thinking of Centropyge angels). I know they'll eat meaty foods too, but they pick at the rocks all day primarily, do they not?

I see no issue with shrims and angels. No reason I haven't gotten any... just lazy.

7. How did you deter aggression when adding new fish? I'm assuming you didn't just drop them in.

Acclimation box, when needed.

8. Angels are sensitive to copper aren't they? What quarantine measures did you take? Strictly observation, TTM?

I use cupramine at lower doses, for longer periods.

The heniochus is my most confusing loss. The body was literally like a flawless museum specimen.

Peter, very sorry to hear about your Poma... That whole pack mentality thing is a tough one, and begs the question as to why all of a sudden now; frustrating to say the least...

Thanks... yeah the Poma was especially frustrating since physically she looked fine. I guess they are more sensitive though and the stress was too much

Hey Peter, can you give any comments about your Chaetodontoplus septentrionalis? How is the temper or personality? I have read that they grow to about 8 inches, so it is more medium sized angel. How big is yours? Have been drooling for this species for some time, but think my 125 gallon would be too small

Chaetodon collare
Chaetodon tinkeri
Chaetodon ephippium
Chaetodon falcula
Chaetodon fasciatus
Chaetodon flavirostris died

Awesome FOWLR Peter. What a stunning collection of butterflies.
Just out of curiosity have you ever had any problems with the smaller sized species of butterflies ,like say the Chaetodon mertensii or xanthurus, being picked on by larger butterflies or angels or do they handle themselves ok?

Surprisingly, no, not at all.

So when your fish died, do they show signs of seclusion or weakness?
Or do you just find them dead in the tank randomly?

sorry to hear about your fish losses. how many deaths is he responsible for? I didn't realize this type of butterfly was so aggressive.

It's been different for each loss.

The flavirostris was sick for a while... weird looking skin condition, which eventually looked like bloat (raised scales).

The melanosoma, as previously posted, died after being beaten up by the other Chaetodontoplus angels in the tank, even though I removed him with no physical damage. Seems the stress was enough to kill him.

The meredithi was a terrible loss for me, as I've had him several years. I had some tank equipment issues, and the tank was without power for a while. For some reason this managed to terminally affect the meredithi, but no other fish. A very sad loss.

The burgessi does not like other roaps. Declevis and mitratus have been victims. He's going after the tinkeri now. I'm trying to trap him, but he's a smart little bugger.

Hey Peter,

So sorry to hear about the losses, seems like some of the major FOWLR threads on RC have fallen by the wayside, mine included. Not sure why, but I just haven't had the time I used to to maintain my fish and update my thread.

What happened with the power outage? How long was it out for? My neighborhood was really susceptible to long term power outages for a while (older homes, above ground power lines and mature trees), seems to have improved here over the past couple years though.

Any new fish on the horizon for you? I watched my tank for a while yesterday and decided I need a showpiece fish or two. I lost the big regal and my puffer earlier this year and the tank just isnt the same without them. Imagine you have the same feeling with the losses you've had recently.

Hope you are well

My old boss use to do a cycle in the washing machine in light bleach, then another rinse in the machine in hot water. I did this a few times, but my water was always "off" and seemed like my chemistry was never right.

I've used two different since then, and have had good results both ways:

1. Light bleach wash, followed by a soak in prime/water, then hot water rinse in washing machine.

2. Just the hot water wash. Doesn't make them as clean, but still works....

I use the washing machine with just some bleach, and let them air dry. I've never noticed an issue connected to this.

Choose carefully... avoid aggressive species, use a QT, and go slowly
