Removing rock and sand to replace them.

I’ve had a lot of issues with my tank which I cannot seem to find any reasons for.

I’m now thinking of removing my rock and sand to replace with some new..
I have a handful of corals mainly lps..and I’m trying to do It without shocking them too much.

Would you strip rock by rock a few days apart I was wondering what effect this would have upon them.
Then for the sand, I’ve got some livesand which was from previous reefers tank breakdown..would you add that then strip the old stuff out..

Again what sort of chemistry effect will this have?

So what issues are you having? If you have a pest issue replacing 1 rock at a time won't help much.

Chemistry issues... on paper my results are good.

Tank typically runs at
po4 0.04 to 0.09
No3 4-10
Dkh stays at 10 can’t get it down.. been like that for months..
Mg 1400
Cal 450

Had ICP test done nothing bad to report off that.. apart from lananthanum which was detected from using a phos remover.

The reason I want to switch it out is because I cannot keep corals alive..I have some lps which are doing ok torch and euphillia, but some acans are a bit small and flat looking.

Sps just die within a week or two.. normally

Playing montipora just dulls out and goes a dark brown red with no glow most of the time.. the tissue or the bit that colours up disappears leaving just polyps.

I want to remove the sand and rock because it’s the only thing I can think of what’s causing these issues..
I cleaned all the rock in a bowl of hydrochloric acid until fully stripped white, I added reeflowers sand and a bottle of colony..

My initial thoughts are that I’ve added a possible contaminant to the tank..?.?
I’m 14 months in and there’s nothing that lives successfully apart from Gha ..

What would you do..?

Your readings don't look all that out of wack. Maybe run a little gfo to help with the gha, or do a lights out for 3 days then pull the rocks and scrub off the gha.

Yes your right they don’t-

now I was watching a palleta video on you tube and his tank accepted corals after a few weeks.. I put mine down to maturity..the reason I couldn’t keep them..

Now I put it down to something being major wrong..F314FA8D-5069-461F-9996-FE5394500CAD.jpg

Add some of the live sand from the other tank. You can siphon some of yours out and add the other. What are you lights? Schedule? How is the flow in the tank? If you are doing water changes what salt? Your Alk may be higher because of the salt. You also could add a couple of pieces of live rock to help seed your tank. The only thing I can see from your tests is to change your DI resin. Also check for stray voltage.

Are there any fish in the system? How much live rock is in the tank? Fish produce a fair amount of ammonia, so they're the gating issue for removing live rock. You probably can remove the sand at any time, if there's a reasonable amount of live rock for the fish load.

What are you lights?

#######Radion g3 pros 50% intensity @300mm above the tank,
Schedule?

#######custom schedule :10 red :10 green :100 blues :60 uv :white 30

How is the flow in the tank?

######2 mp40qd and 2 mp10qd. Started with higher flow now dropped it..to fairly low.
Still good to moderate though..

If you are doing water changes what salt?
###### Tmpr I do a change about every three to four weeks.. and dose Tm A ionic trace elements and bacto balance.

Your Alk may be higher because of the salt.

#####Salt dkh is around 7 when I tested it... my tank runs at 10dkh

You also could add a couple of pieces of live rock to help seed your tank. The only thing I can see from your tests is to change your DI resin.

#####Iíve changed di resin but Iím wondering would chlorines from tap water etc cause a problem..

Also check for stray voltage

####How do I test that.....

####Circa 30 to 40 litres

##### I run siporax in the sump as a biological media, if I was to remove it would this support the fish stock?

.

Gents please see the responses marked in the quote box marked with ######
