How fast do coral grow?
In this timelime you can see how a small frag of the staghorn coral has grown up to the surface, cut down and again grew back to the surface within a few months.

It's been a while ago that i posted on forums.
It seems like i lack inspiring material.
Beside that, the warmer the season becomes the more my attention shifts towards my other hobbies.
I am very passionate about many things that involves toys with speed and engines.

It has been a while since my last posting.
Summertime is my time for outdoorsports and activities.

The reefs are cruising on autopilot and i regularly clean the windows/skimmer/powerfilter and fill up the dosing containers. Nothing exciting...

While working on my rooftop is had a surprise visit from some german reefing friend.
The were totaly surprised by the growthrate of my EZ550reef and posted this movie.
https://youtu.be/BxocXzmn3no
It's in german but Youtube has a function which can translate into english subtitles.

This tank was started in 2015.

I did a drastic rescape on the EZ550reef, because it was to much work to maintain.
I hope i can now getaway with another maintenance free year.

How are you able to keep corals from falling/breaking when they get that size. Every time I have a specimen reach the 12-18” across level, they will snap and break off at the main trunk under the weight. Sometimes the entire encrusting base will pop off in one sheet as well off the rock.

I will do a summary

When things seems to be At the Peaks it usually means that it can only go downhill.
It would have at that density of corals and a consumption of 4,85dkh/day.
There was no more space for growth. Flow and light limitation was constantly lurking and it was very annoying to break of some branches everytime i clean the windows.

The new look is just to make sure i can delay the need for maintenance for a long time.
Now It's like getting some renewed energy/inspiration to see how the tank develop day by day.

Most large colony's are grown from frags placed in 2017.

Watch this movie from july 2017

most corals were just frags or not even placed yet

If you study the pictures all the coral are growing into each other and building a reef. Just like in the natuur with nobody pruning.
This is rocksteady mass (liferock)

That's less work than constant pruning.
But once a year i reach the point i have to do a partial or total rescape. I hate that....
But on the other had it,'s also a good thing. I get the pleasure to see it all develop into a dense reef again.

The large solitairy colony i fixed the base to a rock with a solid amouth of reefcement.

After the total rescape i introduced a few new species in my EZ550reef.
A good friend took a reefing sabatical and donated all his corals. I promised him that i would take good care of them. if he re-enter the hobby he can pickup all his corals.

So you see not everyone leaf the hobby due too many failure. Some just want to take a break.
