does anyone find that on the modded mj 1200 the black plastic rubs through down into the red shaft holder.

it seems the pressure of the big prop is eating the red plastic, im on my second one in a short time

I've noticed that before but they ran fine without the red part . maybe a tiny washer would stop that ?

i was looking at them today on http://www.mcmaster.com/ really wasn't sure what type of plastic would be best . kinda thought the fiberglass or nylon ones might work well . the Kapton (Polyimide) looks good too. some of the plastic ones are like 10 cents. i tried to find a Teflon coated plastic one but didn't have any luck.

not sure its worth messing with if it works fine without the red cap

Ok, I know this question has been asked. But I'm not having any luck finding anything in search.

Is anyone selling these? Not as a kit, or just parts... but making them, testing them, and selling them.

I'm perfectly capable of doing it myself, but I've got a wife on bedrest, and when she gets off bedrest, we'll have a new baby boy. It could easily be a year or more from now before I could ever get around to building my own. And I don't just need one of them. If anyone here is selling them, or would like to be commissioned to build a few, please let me know at MITCHELWB-REEF at YAHOO dut COM

Thanks
MitchelWB

According to RC policies, we are prohibited from posting on here to make and sell these. One or two people have been banned for doing such things.

That said though, I'm sure if you contact some of the posters on this thread directly, you should be able to get the help you need

Mcmaster does sell teflon washers, they are commonly abbreviated "PTFE." One kind of telfon that is really good at reducing friction is called "Rulon" - a thrust washer is what you are looking for. They're fairly expensive though. Otherwise, I've looked at ceramic washers, but they are even more than Rulon.

I just built my first one from the mjmods kit. I too am worried about this, but I'll just have to keep an eye on it for a while. If it wears through, my local hardware store has tons of plastic washers and stuff.

I got some parts from MJmods.com and put together my 1200MaxiStream. The Dumas 3004 Prop really makes much more flow than my old 3 bladed graupner. Wicked! Great thread dhnguyen and everyone.

With the parts from MJmods, it took me about 10 minutes to build.

Though I dont know where, or how long ago in this monster thread, I brought this up when I was modding Aquaclears because it seemed that they had even more of a problem with the force causing the magnet to rub on the base of the ceramic shaft... making noise.

We came up with using small teflon washers... and though they dont last forever, they do cut down noise and are simply replaced when close to wearing through.

Are you using teflon washers now? Have you had to replace them?

I noticed on the parts lists on Tunze's website that they had some thrust washers and they looked like they were made of metal to me. But I couldn't really tell for sure. The ones on the Stream looked like they were plastic though.

I only have two MJ mods that I am using (I just dont have a huge need), and one with teflon (a MJ1200), and one without (MJ900). I wanted to compare. I have not yet needed to replace anything as they were only built this summer.

Holy DogCrap!
Completed my MJ1200/Dumas 3004 mods yesterday and man do these things flow. They are quite a bit louder than a stock MJ1200. Is that just mine? I have them mounted (both a stock 1200 and the stream 1200) via magnetic mount to the side of the aquarium.

I actually have 2 of these streams in my 55 (yea two of them) in the back corners pointing straight down. I have a rubble bottom with a PVC plenum drain underneath.
